The Princeton University Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) provides leadership, technical support, information and training, consultation, and periodic audits of environmental, health and safety practices and regulatory compliance. EHS employs a dedicated and knowledgeable staff of 19 professional and support staff working to address health and safety issues in several broad areas including: workplace safety, occupational health, laboratory safety, emergency management, environmental programs, and general health and safety for the campus community.
Assists EHS senior staff and program managers with aspects of laboratory-related health and safety programs, such as the Laboratory Safety Program, Biosafety Program, Hazardous Waste Program, Chemical Safety Program, etc. This includes developing thorough knowledge of all applicable standards, codes and regulations; providing for timely dissemination of pertinent information to all segments of the University; developing and presenting training with minimal direction from senior EHS staff; developing and maintaining web-based materials in support of assigned programs, creating and maintaining SOP templates, fielding technical questions and providing health and safety consultation as needed.
Conducts health and safety surveys related to assigned programs, including general laboratory safety, controlled substances, biological safety and animal care, and conducts or assists with various health and safety surveys in support of the Laboratory Safety Program. Develops and documents recommendations for corrective action. Through use of institutional health & safety compliance software, identifies and transmits findings and recommendations as well as completion tracking of identified remedial action.
Provides customer service to research community including delivery and assembly of supplies and equipment, as well as oversight and escorting of contract employees.
Responds to incidents occurring within University laboratories; i.e., those involving laboratory materials and equipment. Provides assistance to laboratory workers and to emergency responders during the course of ongoing incidents and/or immediately following. Conducts accident and incident investigations as assigned by the EHS senior staff and program managers.
2-4 years work experience providing safety services in a university or research laboratory setting
Ability to master computer software, including Microsoft Office Suite
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to clearly and effectively communicate to a diverse community of clients
Able to effectively prepare and present information and training (laboratory safety, chemical waste management) to adult learners
Ability to work in a team environment and follow work rules and procedures
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds (e.g., waste drums, instruments, SCBA), climb ladders, wear respiratory protection, work in hot or cold environments, stand for extended periods of time, enter confined spaces, and work on elevated surfaces.
Valid driver's license
Good organizational and time management skills and ability to balance multiple assignments
Experience in creating and maintaining electronic media; e.g., web pages (Drupal), online training (Captivate, Storyline)
IATA and DOT certification or ability to achieve this status
