  • Job Summary

    News gathering, story development, news writing, in-depth reporting for both print and online platforms, shoot, edit photos and video as assigned, digital and social media coverage.

    Job Duties

    Receives assignments and /or evaluates news leads and news tips to develop story ideas.  Composes information into in-depth news and feature stories.  Takes photographs or shoots video to illustrate stories.  Maintains and updates assigned digital technology as necessary.  Consistently meets deadlines, writes clean, concise news and feature stories for both print and online.  Edits video, photos and audio.  Complies and incorporates supplemental material and background information from a range of sources, such as files, reference libraries, and/or individual knowledge sources, as appropriate.  Mentors and assists the reporting staff including cultivation of sources, research methods, data management and story development.  Analyzes complex political, cultural, economic and interpersonal situations and deducing possible motives, goals and outcomes.  Assists the Assistant Editor with duties as assigned including: copy editing, coordination of the assignments and development of story leads.  Coordinate with multimedia team to create multi-media and social media content.  Assist Editorial staff to maximize impact, reach of all stories and projects.  Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT

    Bachelor's degree from 4-year college or university in Journalism or Communications; or six years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

     

    EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT

    An additional four (4) years of newsroom experience.

     

    COMPUTER SKILLS

    An individual should have knowledge of Database software; Internet software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.

     

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

    Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating. Driver's license is required because employee will need to drive to perform the duties required of this position (cover news stories, and interview).

     

    OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    None listed.

     

    OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

    Knowledge of desktop publishing is preferred, particularly Adobe Suite.  Some evenings, holidays and weekends may be required.  Must be prepared to show published samples of previous work and take a writing test.
