Responsibilities:

Position Summary:

A WIC peer counselor is a paraprofessional support person who gives basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

* Two (2) years recent customer service experience.  
* High school diploma/GED. 
* Attends breastfeeding training classes to become a peer counselor.
* Work towards attainment of certification as a Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) or Certified Lactation Educator(CLE) within one year of hire.  
* Must be an active listener and demonstrate compassion for breastfeeding clients.
* Must attend a series of breastfeeding classes, observe outpatient lactation consultants, and read assigned books and materials about breastfeeding.  
* Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help breastfeeding clients enjoy a positive experience.
* Has reliable transportation.  
* DRV LIC = Current driver's license

Preferred Qualifications:  

* Be a former or current WIC client with  breastfeeding experience. 
* Has breastfed at least one baby (does not have to be currently breastfeeding).
