Tool & Die Maker - Technical Inspector, constructs and repairs jigs, fixtures, cutting tools, gauges, or metal dies or molds used in shaping or forming metal or nonmetallic material (e.g., plastic, plaster, rubber, glass). Work typically involves planning and laying out work according to models, blueprints, drawings, or other written or oral specifications, understanding the working properties of common metals and alloys, selecting appropriate materials, tools, and processes required to complete task, making necessary shop computations, and setting up and operating various machine tools and related equipment. Work for someone in this position also involves using various Tool and Die Maker's hand tools and precision measuring instrument, working to very close tolerances, heat-treating metal parts and finished tools and dies to achieve required qualities, and fitting and assembling parts to prescribed tolerances and allowances.
Responsibilities:
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
* The Technical Inspector (TI) examines work in progress, the construction and final inspections of repairs jigs, fixtures, cutting tools, gauges, or metal dies or molds used in shaping or forming metal or nonmetallic material (e.g., plastic plaster, rubber, glass).
* Examines specifications such as blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions, and visualizes product to determine materials required and machines to be used to fabricate parts.
* Inspect welds on both gas welding or brazing and any combination of arc welding processes.
* The TI will inspect and give guidance related to tasks such as thermal cutting and grinding, repairs broken or cracked parts, fills holes and increases size of metal parts, positions, and clamps together components of fabricated metal products preparatory to welding.
* They may locate and task repairs for cracks in industrial engine cylinder heads, using inspection equipment and gas torch.
* The TI will need to be knowledgeable in working with steel, aluminum, cast iron, nickel, brass, sheet metal and ballistic armor plating of various metals.
* Inspect painters after coating surfaces of motor vehicles such as automobiles, buses, and trucks with paint, lacquer, epoxy, resin, or other material, using brushes, rollers, spray guns and other devices, removes old paint from vehicle.
* Inspect surfaces after liquid paint remover and scrapers have been used to ensure the surfaces are smooth.
* Inspect equipment when the painters are masking and covering portion of surfaces not to be painted.
* Inspect finished painted equipment or specified portion of the vehicle that requires paint.
* Performs other related duties as assigned.
MATERIAL & EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED:
* Various machine tools and measuring instruments.
* Steel Toe shoes are required.
* Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required in certain areas while work is being conducted. Such PPE includes, but is not limited to: Face Mask, head, foot, hand, vision and hearing protective devices.
* Periodic use of computer systems and multi-function devices (MFD).
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
* Work is generally conducted in a shop environment. However, duties may involve the conduct of work in the outdoors area with a potential exposure to extreme climatic condition.
* Work requires prolonged standing at a maintenance table and periodic use of a solvent parts cleaning machine.
* Dirt, dust, grease and oils are always present.
* There can be exposure to chemicals that may burn and irritate the skin and eyes if proper personal protective equipment is not worn. Failure to follow appropriate safety procedures could result in cuts, bruises, shocks and strains.
* Must comply with OSHA, EPA, installation fire prevention regulations and published company work rules.
* May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
* Frequent exposure to conditions of inclement weather, extreme heat and cold, high/low humidity, blowing sand and dust, and working in confined spaces and at heights.

* The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions. One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.
* A normal work week is 40 hours (5 days a week) whoever must be willing to work additional hours when mission requires.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
* Work requires standing, climbing, bending, and occasionally working in cramped and awkward positions.
* Employee stands for long periods.
* Frequently lifts equipment weighing 25 pounds. Occasionally assists lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 75 pounds.
* Required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as: operates machines, such as lathes, drill presses, power saws, and mills where the seeing job is at or within arm's reach; performs mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature, such as carpenter, technicians, service people, plumbers, painters, mechanics, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATES:
* High School Diploma or equivalent.
* Must be able to obtain and maintain a Common Access Card (CAC).
* Must be able to pass a pre- employment drug screen.
* Must possess valid State Driver's License.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
* Professional Technical Training in Tool Making & Die Repair or equivalent experience.
* Safety oriented, knowledge of MIOSHA standards is desired.
* Sheet Metal and class A surface experience preferred.
* Able to demonstrate understanding of how job performance affects product quality and customer satisfaction.
* Ability to read blueprints.
* Able to prepare, read and interpret written reports, instruction, procedures and guidelines.
* Work to close tolerances as close as 0.0005 inch.
* Must have basic computer skills.
* Able to effectively operate safely in a high-pressure work environment.
