Overview: Responsible for the continuous monitoring of the Central Monitor Unit, documentation of the rhythm strips, and timely reporting of rhythm changes to nurse or physician. Responsible for tasks/activities related to daily maintenance of the Monitoring Unit and area. Responsibilities: * Participate in the nursing inter-shift report data gathering. * Makes rounds on all monitored patients to check their leads, skin integrity and monitor settings. * Perform tasks/activities to ensure maximum accuracy and clarity of rhythm on oscilloscope. * Maintain safety mechanisms in place as per Hospital policy and procedure. * Monitor the Central Monitoring Unit and maintains a log to document the rhythm analysis for each monitored patient. This analysis should include at least the rate, rhythm, PR interval, QT interval, and rhythm interpretation. * Report to nurse of any changes in rate or rhythm as soon as identified. * Troubleshoot monitoring problems and performs corrective actions. Refer to nurse or Bio-Med Department as needed. * Obtain a 12 lead EKG as assigned by nurse or physician. * Document rhythm strips as per unit routines during emergency code procedure, or as instructed by nurse or physician. * Maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of the Central Monitoring environment by performing housekeeping chores as needed. * Maintain adequate monitoring supplies such as electrode gel, leads, EKG paper, etc. * Check the EKG machines, defibrillators and external pacemaker to ensure cleanliness and readiness for use. * Perform related duties as assigned by Nurse-in-Charge. Qualifications: Education: * High School Graduate/GED or equivalent required. * College education desirable. Experience: * No prior experience required, Monitor Technician experience preferred. Knowledge and Skills: * Math, and computer skills. * Works as a team player. * Demonstrates respect and professionalism in all interactions. * Excellent oral and communication skills * Excellent attention to details * Decision making and problem solving * Able to see, hear, read and write in English * Ability to fully utilize OBH's electronic record systems, equipment and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position as required. Licenses, Certifications: * Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association, required. * Basic Arrhythmia or Dysrhythmia Class with Certificate, required. Physical Requirements: * Physically demanding, high-stress environment * Occasional exposure to blood and body fluids, communicable diseases, chemicals, radiation, and repetitive motions * Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients * Manual and finger dexterity * Hand and eye coordination * Sitting, standing, and walking for extensive periods of time * Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 35 pounds * Corrected vision and hearing to within normal range * Frequently sitting at desk working on computer
