				Overview:

Has the essential responsibility of performing chemical analyses and other functions pertinent to chemical analyses in patient testing.

Responsibilities:

* Reports to supervisors in the Core laboratory and will have no supervisory role to perform.
* Performs tests on serum, plasma or other biological specimen. After having been trained, must perform these tests accurately and within the stated turnaround times.  Understands nature of "stat" requests and acts accordingly.
* Repeats assays when results are questionable and informs his/her immediate Supervisor of questionable results.
* Judges adequacy of submitted specimens and requests an additional specimen if necessary. Prepares specimens for analysis.
* Properly labels specimens at all phases within laboratory and is capable of recording and logging test results.
* Understands basic concepts of quality control. Performs, once instructed, all proper quality control tests, and records in proper fashion all quality control results.
* Informs immediate Supervisor when there is a failure in quality control for each assay he/she performs.
* Informs immediate Supervisor when an instrument malfunctions. Records all instrument malfunctions in the proper logbook and notes corrective action taken.
* Signs all logbooks or worksheets for assays he/she is responsible for carrying out.
* Familiar with the laboratories listed Core lab panic values. Repeats all derived panic values and reports the test results immediately.  Informs his/her Supervisor prior to reporting a panic value.
* Maintains an adequate supply of materials or reagents for all assays he/she performs. Informs his/her Supervisor when assays need to be reordered.
* Performs the following peripheral clinical chemistry laboratory duties:
* Keeps own work area clean and free of safety hazards. Reports all unsafe conditions to Supervisor.
* Fills supply cabinets with reagents, etc.
* Prepared to teach and pass on information or techniques that have been taught to other technicians, etc.
* Prepared to work directly with patients when Core lab assays are dependent on this function.
* Performs clerical duties relating to Core laboratory function; such as, logging results, transcription, answering telephone, and reporting values by phone or other mechanical devices. Reports values by phone and documents this action in accordance with laboratory procedure.
* Prepared to make any entries necessary in conjunction with any of the described duties using computer techniques.

* Performs other related duties assigned by supervisor.  In an emergency, performs other duties necessary for the welfare of patients or the efficient operations of the institution.

Qualifications:

Education:

* Associate's Degree in laboratory science from an accredited learning institution.

Experience:

* No experience required but must possess license.
* Completed clinical rotation from accredited program.

Knowledge and Skills:

* Ability to fully utilize BHMC's electronic record systems, equipment and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position.

Licenses, Certifications:

* Licensed by the New York State as a Clinical Laboratory Technician.
* Must attain a valid NYS Laboratory Technician license within six months of hire date.

Physical Requirements:

* Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day. 
* Position will be required to stoop, bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
