Overview: Evening surgical first assistant needed for a 3pm-11pm shift. Some flexibility on hours, looking for evening coverage. JFK University Medical Center is seeking a Full time Surgical Assistant to manage the day-to-day perioperative needs of surgical patients in conjunction with the attending surgeon. The successful candidate will be a surgically trained Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner with RNFA able to perform as a Surgical First Assistant in the OR in all surgical disciplines including but not limited to, robotic surgery, general surgery, colorectal surgery, surgical oncology, head and neck surgery, urologic surgery, vascular surgery plastic surgery and microvascular surgery . The candidate will maintain a collaborative work environment that is safe, just, and founded on principles of high reliability and quality outcomes for patients and colleagues. The Surgical First Assistant will perform duties in accordance with state and federal regulations as well as network policies, scope of practice guidelines and approved clinical privileges. Responsibilities: 1. Complies with the patient Bill of Rights; ensures responsiveness to patient needs, respect of patients privacy and confidentiality of all patient, family, physician and hospital related information. Provides appropriate explanations to patients or family members where applicable. Consistently performs in a manner that demonstrates the highest standards of the JFK philosophy of patient satisfaction and service excellence when interacting with patients, other staff members or the community. Demonstrates flexibility throughout the day, keeping the needs of the department, patient, and customer first. 2. Communicates with supervisor and/or OR to clarify assignment. 3. Ability to work effectively with operative surgeon and to carry out designated tasks in order to facilitate the successful conclusion of a surgical procedure. Ability to communicate with co-workers and to help direct activities so as to facilitate surgery to completion. 4. Ability to assist with the operating surgeon in recognizing potential problems during a surgical procedure. Shows knowledge in resolving problematic situations arising during surgery. Recognizes the role played by first assistant versus primary surgeon in performing a surgical procedure. 5. Ability to adapt to a variety of situations and to have a working relationship with associates, nursing staff, APP first assists and paramedical personnel. 6. Perform perioperative care inclusive of but not limited to pre operative evaluation of the patient in the holding room, updating of History and Physical, facilitation of on time start, prep and draping of the patient, surgical assisting and closure, maintaining continuity of care through to PACU sign out to receiving team and post operative checks. 7. Functions as a resource and educator to other Team Members and participates in the training of surgical assists. 8. Participates in the improvement process of quality patient care: Takes self-directed or self-motivated initiative to participate in department meetings, quality initiatives and department PI activities. 9. Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Centers Organizational Competencies, Elearning, and standards of behavior. 10. Displays an understanding and awareness of and performs all duties in accordance with the Hospital's and HMH Network Mission and Vision Statements. 11. Adheres to all Hospital infection control and safety policies. 12. Other duties and/or projects as assigned. 13. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior. Qualifications: * Knowledge, Education and Skills Required: * For PA: * Successful completion of an approved physicians assistant program, accredited by the Accreditation and Review Committee for Physician Assistants (ARC-PA) or other NCCPA certification examination qualifying accrediting agency. * Maintenance of a minimum of 100 hours of CME in accordance with NCCPA regulations every 2 years * For RNFA: * Successful completion of approved RNFA program resulting in an active certification. Maintenance of a minimum of 100 hours of CME in accordance with NCCPA regulations every 2 years * Knowledge, Education and Skills Preferred: * 2+ years of surgical assistant experience preferred * Required Certification/Licensing: * New Jersey State Physician Assistant Certification * Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification required * Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification * New Jersey CDS license * Federal DEA license
