				Overview:

The Laboratory Supervisor oversees the Lab Couriers for Unity Point Health - Des Moines. It requires organizational skills that can manage logistics, driver routes, vehicle maintenance, scheduling, and all microsoft office tools especially excel spreadsheets.

The Laboratory Support Supervisor is responsible for assisting in planning, organizing, maintaining, and controlling laboratory service processes in phlebotomy, specimen processing, specimen transport, billing and registration within financial, LEAN productivity standards and budgetary guidelines on all assigned campuses. The Laboratory Support Supervisor ensures high quality patient care by providing excellent customer service. 

Responsibilities:

Management and Leadership

  Establishes monitoring systems for equipment, supplies, processing, polices, procedures, training and developing programs, employee competency and compliance to regulatory bodies including compliance plan, ICD, CPT coding, Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) for Phlebotomy, Registration, Billing and Processing. 

  Assists in maintaining the billing system, the daily billing processes, and reports to finance

  Practice reflects knowledge of HIPPA, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare

  Establishes systems for monitoring according to LEAN productivity standards the transportation, collection and processing of specimens that include courier services, registering, ordering, labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, distribution and storing 

  Responsible for overseeing the day-to-day workflow of the draw sites including the review of staffing needs and supervision and training of staff in good customer relations and office procedures

  Ensures that daily operations are run effectively and efficiently by streaming processes and managing workload

  Responsible for ensuring staff are following all stablished process to ensure comprehensive and accurate completion of job duties

  Responsible for schedules and staffing of team members including monitoring timecards, timecard corrections and identifying gap staffing coverage

  Establish effective mechanisms of communication with team members, patients, UPH affiliates personnel to foster an environment, of openness, trust, teamwork and staff development. 

  Demonstrate sound fidcal management of operation through the elimination of waste

  Monitor's productivity and errors of staff

  Monitors daily activity and productivity, recommending adjustments to staff responsibilities to meet department goals

  Completes annual performance appraisals for direct reports

  Provides computer support to team members 

  Assist team members with daily dities as needed

  Servies in system administrator roles for reference labs, Epic, SQ

  Serve as subject matter expert to Laboratory Support Techs

  Act as a go to person for other departments and assists them with their questions and concerns

  Have basic knowledge of all tasks of the Laboratory Support Tech processes

  Assists with physician, clients and patients' questions, suggestions and complaints

  Completes RL's

  Monitor's equipment and supplies - contacts appropriate departments to repair or replace 

Employee Development

  Interviews, selects, educates, trains, ensures competency, schedules, develops, disciplines, and evaluates employees

  Serves as a mentor, preceptor, and resource to the clinical laboratory and clinical areas related to Phlebotomy, registration, courier, billing, and client services 

  Recommends and implements training for staff 

Departmental Support 

  Develops and implements communication plans concerning courier services, specimen collection/phlebotomy, policy changes, new procedures, patient results, ordering, normal values, and laboratory hours of operation to laboratory staff, nursing units and clients

  Direct the resolution of problems and provides direction and advice for staff and clients. Manages resources to meet quality and financial goals

  This position may be assigned a specific mission to address in an emergency situation to assist in disaster response and recovery as part of the UPH - DSM hospital Incident Command System 

  Make recommendations for operational changes, staffing alignment changes

  Works with leadership to develop and effective training program for new staff and ongoing training for existing staff

  Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Education:

High School graduate or equivalent

Experience:

Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience

Experience with ICD-10 and CPT coding preferred.

License(s)/Certification(s):

Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  Writes, reads, comprehends, and speaks fluent English

  Basic computer knowledge using work processing, spreadsheet, email and web browser

Other:

Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
