Responsible for performing the following testing procedures: Electrocardiograms, Holter Monitoring, Cardiac Stress Testing, to assist physicians in determining cardiac status.

Responsibilities:

A day in the life of a Senior EKG Technician at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

* Schedules all appointments for holter monitoring and cardiac stress testing for both inpatient and outpatients.
* Instructs outpatients on proper registration procedures. Communicates clearly and tactfully with patients.
* Escorts patients to, from and within treatment rooms and carries portable equipment to patient's bedside.
* Instructs patient in preparation for administering the test to ensure patient understanding, cooperation, and comfort. Prepares patient and initiate 24 hour recording for holter monitor. Communicates clearly and tactfully with patients
* Contact referring physicians as to which physician on the interpretation panel he would prefer.
* Schedules procedures with physician as to date and time of Cardiac Stress Test procedure.
* Prepares and instructs patient before each test as to proper clothing, application of electrodes and positioning. Communicates clearly and tactfully with patients.
* Prepares each patient before cardiac stress test and assist physician in performing procedure utilizing knowledge of technique and regulations appropriate to the ages of patients served.
* Prepares all data for interpretation . Checks all requisitions for completeness of information needed by the physician for interpretation . May study patients medical records to obtained record identifying information required for holter monitor or cardiac stress test records.
* Prepares holter monitor reports for interpretation by physicians. Contacts physicians with verbal reports as indicated.
* Prepares and positions the patient, operates the EKG machine.
* Performs EKG, Holter Monitoring, and Cardiac Stress Testing procedures within 24 hours of receipt of orders by physicians. Performs EKG, Holter Monitoring and Cardiac Stress Testing Procedures with high technical quality, in a minimum of 95% of tests performed, as determined by physicians and the absence of documentation of the contrary.
* Ensures delivery of excellent customer service resulting in positive and improving patient satisfaction scores for department and Medical Center.
* Keeps daily logs of tests administered, and prepares statistical reports as required.
* Collects patient data as required for physicians billing and submits patient charges to Business Office daily.
* Maintains level of supplies and orders replenishment with approval of supervisor.
* Complies with all safety and infection control procedures during testing and clean-up.
* Performs preventive maintenance and ensures equipment is operating properly.
* Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
* High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent
* Certification showing completion of EKG training program.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
* Two months of clinical EKG training, preferred. Basic knowledge of cardiac rhythm.

Working Conditions:
* Extensive employee and outside contacts.
* High Stress
* Works indoors in a well lighted and ventilated area.
* Possibility of cuts or minor burns from instruments and equipment
* Some direct exposure to contagion, but risk is minimal when proper safety precautions are observed.
* Possibility of strains due to moving patients (or objects).
* Requires substantial standing, walking, stooping, and lifting.
* Willingness to work with the realization that errors and incompetency may have serious consequences to patients.

Physical Demands:
* Requires constant verbal communication in person or using the phone.
* Requires frequent reading of correspondence, reports, material, etc.
* Frequently lifts objects from 10 - 150 lbs.
* Frequently lifts with assistance objects greater than 150 lbs.

Mental Demands:
* Requires ability to read and concentrate frequently to check accuracy of reports, correspondence, computer records, etc.
* Requires ability to read, understand, analyze and interpret policies and procedures.
* Requires ability to deal with stress of dealing with public, frequent interruptions, and working on more than one task concurrently.
* Requires flexibility in order to respond to changes in priorities, special project assignments, and emergency situations.
* Apply principals of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions in order to provide effective patient care.
* Manage time appropriately to meet patient and department needs.

Equipment Operated:
* EKG, Cardiac Stress Machine, Holter Monitors, phone, computer, copier
