Position Summary

The Special Assistant to the US Global Malaria Coordinator will primarily support the US Global Malaria Coordinator, a Presidential appointee charged with oversight and coordination of all resources and international activities of the US government relating to efforts to combat malaria, and will sit within the Bureau for Global Health, as an Institutional Support Contractor (ISC) through the Global Health Training, Advisory, and Support Contract (GHTASC). 

The US President's Malaria Initiative (PMI), which is housed within the Bureau for Global Health, seeks an individual with expertise in providing high-level management support to contribute to the Initiative's work on malaria control and elimination. PMI is the US Government's (USG) flagship global malaria initiative and is led by USAID and co-implemented with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Oversight of PMI is carried out under the leadership of the U.S. Global Malaria Coordinator. 

As described in End Malaria Faster: U.S. President's Malaria Initiative Strategy 2021-2026, the goals of PMI are to reduce malaria mortality, reduce malaria morbidity, and accelerate progress toward national or sub-national elimination in PMI partner countries. PMI's strategic approach includes reaching the unreached, strengthening community health systems, keeping malaria services resilient, investing locally, and innovating and leading.  PMI supports the implementation of evidence-based interventions at-scale, including malaria diagnosis with microscopy and malaria diagnostic tests; malaria treatment with artemisinin-based combination therapy; vector control with insecticide-treated mosquito nets and indoor residual spraying; chemoprevention, such as intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy and seasonal malaria chemoprevention; surveillance; supply chain strengthening; and SBC. The Initiative is results-based, focused, and exhibits a high level of financial and programmatic accountability.

The Special Assistant is an essential member of the PMI Front Office and provides efficient day-to-day support to the US Global Malaria Coordinator, performing a variety of both complex and routine management and programmatic duties, as described below. In addition, as directed and appropriate, the Special Assistant will provide broader support to PMI Front Office leadership, including the Deputy US Global Malaria Coordinator.

Responsibilities:

The Special Assistant to the US Global Malaria Coordinator will be an integral member of the PMI Front Office. Specifically, the Special Assistant will be charged with the following:

* Providing high level and confidential management support to the US Global Malaria Coordinator, Deputy US Global Malaria Coordinator, and other members of the PMI Front Office as assigned
* Managing the overall workflow and coordination of the Front Office and exercising a wide degree of latitude with respect to regarding workflow, priorities, and methods in addition to an in-depth knowledge of Coordinator's style, methods of operation, relationships, and authorities
* Preparing or supporting preparation of high-quality written documents, briefing notes, presentations, research summaries, and materials, including compiling and reviewing information on requested topics, preparing oral and written reports, and making recommendations to the PMI Front Office
* Facilitating correspondence between the PMI Front Office and other Bureaus and Offices in the Agency, as well as interagency and external stakeholders, ensuring that all documentation and correspondence meet deadlines, are complete, and are in compliance with USAID rules, regulations, and standards
* Supporting coordination of leadership meetings and liaise with internal and external stakeholders on behalf of the US Global Malaria Coordinator and the PMI Front Office to gather information on specific requests
* Coordinating preparations for events, trips, high-level meetings, and other engagements, including developing travel calendars, organizing briefing books, creating information packets, preparing itineraries, managing logistics, and hosting planning calls
* Facilitating PMI Front Office meetings and attending internal and external meetings to gather information and report back to the Coordinator and other PMI Front Office Leadership as directed
* Supporting junior staff to assess meeting requests and facilitate complex scheduling and rescheduling requests as needed

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualification Requirements

* Master's degree with 4 years, Bachelor's degree with 6 years, Associate's degree with 8 years, or high school graduate with 10 years relevant experience in social sciences, public health, international relations, business administration, or a related degree
* Experience providing high-quality management or analysis support to a high-level principal 
* Self-starter who can exercise good judgment and has excellent communication skills, along with attention to detail and an ability to manage time and proactively problem solve
* Knowledge of public health development programs, procedures, and systems and USAID rules, regulations, procedures, and systems, including financial systems, strongly preferred
* Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google suite
* Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 10% of the time
* US citizenship or US permanent residency and ability to obtain at a minimum a facility access clearance
