Overview:
The Senior Vice President, Associate General Counsel, Risk Management and Litigation provides strategic leadership, tactical insights, and substantive expertise in managing a diverse range of professional liability claims. Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, this role oversees the Claims Management team, the company's insurance portfolio, and the broader risk management strategy. The position is critical in ensuring comprehensive oversight of the company's risk management operations, driving effective resolution of liability matters while safeguarding organizational interests.
Responsibilities:
* Lead a team of claims handlers to manage litigation and compensable events, implementing strategies to minimize professional liability exposure and costs.
* Analyze data to predict future exposure, inform strategies for reducing claims and expenses, and improve company services.
* Manage professional liability claims, including "pro se" claims and those involving healthcare services to patients in correctional facilities, in coordination with multiple outside law firms.
* Oversee the Clinical Risk Management department, including a specialized correctional health clinical claims director nurse, to develop a comprehensive risk management model.
* Collaborate with operational, clinical, and compliance leaders to ensure risk management practices align with the company's values and motto of "Always Do The Right Thing."
Qualifications:
Education
* Graduate of ABA-accredited law school.
Experience
* Minimum of 15+ years of legal experience in litigation, and litigation and risk management, preferably in both a law firm and in-house environment; healthcare industry experience required.
* Experience working with healthcare clients is preferred, working knowledge of common Federal healthcare regulatory elements (HIPAA, Fraud/Abuse/Waste avoidance, etc.)
* Expertise and significant experience in handling medical malpractice litigation and professional liability claims management is a requirement of the position.
* Experience managing and defending 8th Amendment, 42 USC 1983 and similar cases is highly desirable.
Licenses/Certifications
* Licensed to practice law and admitted to the bar in at least one state or the District of Columbia
* Eligible for admission as an In-House Counsel in the state of Tennessee.
Compliance
* Must remain in good standing with the Board of Professional Responsibility.
