Overview:
An Ascension Island Safety Manager is responsible for overseeing and implementing comprehensive health and safety practices across all operations on Ascension Island, ensuring compliance with local regulations, conducting risk assessments, delivering safety training, investigating incidents, and promoting a strong safety culture within the island community, often working in a remote and challenging environment with limited resources. Ensure job safety training evaluates and identifies PPE requirements. All facilities must comply with DoD standards, UFC 3-600-01, Fire Protection Engineering for Facilities, DAF guidance and NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, AAAF Occupational Safety Plan and Procedures. Establish and maintain currency of an AAAF Occupational Safety Plan.
Responsibilities:
* Conduct regular risk assessments across all island operations to identify potential hazards and develop preventative measures.
* Analyze safety data to identify trends and implement targeted safety interventions.
* Develop and maintain safety procedures and protocols for various activities on the island.
* Ensure adherence to all local and international safety regulations and standards.
* Monitor compliance with safety policies and procedures through regular inspections and audits.
* Stay updated on legislative changes and incorporate them into safety practices.
* Design and deliver comprehensive safety training programs for all staff, including new employees, covering topics like hazard identification, emergency response, and safe work practices.
* Promote a strong safety culture through regular safety meetings, campaigns, and communication initiatives.
* Promptly investigate all safety incidents and near misses to determine root causes and implement corrective actions.
* Maintain accurate records of incidents, injuries, and safety performance data.
* Report findings to relevant stakeholders and management.
* Develop and maintain emergency response plans for various scenarios (fire, medical emergencies, natural disasters).
* Conduct regular emergency drills and ensure staff are adequately trained in emergency procedures.
* Work closely with different departments on the island to integrate safety considerations into all operations.
* Collaborate with local authorities and emergency services to ensure coordinated response to incidents.
* Provide safety advice and guidance to project managers and contractors.
* Ensures that all modes of transportation for personnel or hazardous material comply with applicable standards to include Federal Highway Administration, U.S. Coast Guard, and federal and state Departments of Transportation (DoT).
Qualifications:
* Education: Equivalent experience from which comparable knowledge and job skills can be obtained may be substituted for education, if degree is required.
* Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety or related field.
* Certifications:
* Certification obtained as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP).
* Experience:
* Proven experience in health and safety management, ideally within a remote or challenging environment. Strong critical-thinking, problem-solving, and project management skills.
