The Lead Therapist for Respiratory Care is responsible for shift to shift optimal patient care. Effective communication, coordination, supervision, skill, and the ability to teach are fundamental to the role as well. 

Responsibilities:

1. Communicates / Collaborates with the respective medical, nursing staff, and respiratory therapy staff in planning, implementing, delivering, and evaluating respiratory care. a. On a clinical level, the lead therapist will align communication strategies that best serve their patient population and the patients' families. b. Pt rounding with RN clinical leaders and MDs may be a part of this responsibility.

2. Oversees activities of Respiratory Care staff on a day-to-day basis: may participate in interviewing and hiring of staff; schedules staff to ensure adequate coverage in patient/hospital area; provides input into, and may administer performance evaluations and counsel staff as necessary. a. Coordinates patient care by creating patient assignments for RTs. i. Such decisions will be made to promote therapist development, continuity of care, and in the interest of allowing cohesive and comprehensive patient care. b. Supports partnering Neonatal facilities in administering resources. c. Advocates and assists in supporting current and future research projects.

3. Supervises patient care. a. The clinical leader will be assigned several therapists they are responsible for. Conducting fair evaluations in conjunction with the department manager is an expectation. b. Effectively communicates behavior adjusting feedback to other therapists.

4. Skillfully executes patient care.a. Clinical expertise on ventilator management, ventilation guidelines (non-invasive and invasive), waveform identification and classification, and oxygen delivery devices are expected, along with the following devices. i. Blood gas interpretation, acquisition, and non-invasive CO2 monitoring. ii. HFOV and Nitric delivery iii. Surfactant and all other medication delivery

5. Teaching, precepting, and coaching are essential. a. Serves as a role model for the profession of respiratory care. b. Sets the standard with relation to behavior, attendance, and sound decision making. c. Inspires other employees to fulfill their roles as conscientious and effective respiratory therapists in the NICU. d. Develops others to become preceptors and charge therapists in their absence.

6. Maintains flexibility with job requirements.a. Attending department and manager driven meetings as outlined by department manager are necessary in maintaining Lead Therapist status. b. Participates in writing and updating departmental policies and procedures. c. Monitors adherence and informs Program Manager of staff who do not follow established policies and procedures. d. Ensures quality control and proper clinical application of all respiratory care equipment and clinical records.

7. Considering the growth and nature of Neonatal Respiratory Care, the Lead Therapist is expected to maintain flexibility with changes taking place in and around the unit to best support the mission of the team.

8. Ensures quality control and proper auditing within the department related to billing, documentation, infection control, or other related matters.

9. Respiratory therapists are authorized to access the unit medication rooms or bedside medication drawers in order to retrieve medications they are authorized to administer.

10. Support and advances respiratory care practice through one or more of the following:a. Participates as a conference speaker/presenterb. Presents to community group(s)c. Participates in professional organizations and activitiesd. Participates on committees, task forces and advisory boards(departments, hospital community)e. Participates on appropriate quality teamsf. Participates in scholarly activities g. Publishes in journals, newsletters

Qualifications:

KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

1. Registered Respiratory Therapist credentialed through the NBRC with licensure to practice in the State of Ohio by the Ohio Respiratory Care Board.

2. Bachelor's degree in any major required, Associate's degree in Respiratory Care from CoARC accredited Respiratory Care program.

3. Must possess and maintain current CPR and obtain PALS certification

4. At least two (2) years critical care experience preferred.

5. Neonatal / Pediatric Specialist (NPS), Certified Asthma Educator (AE-C) or Certified Pulmonary Function (CPFT) credential within 6 months of position acceptance.

6. Demonstrated ability to teach utilizing principles of adult learning.

7. ECMO bedside specialist preferred.

8. Ability to plan, organize, and implement work independently, while functioning as an integral part of the health care team.

9. Supervisory skills required to plan, direct, and evaluate the work of the staff.

10. Strong verbal and written communication skills

11. Effective interpersonal skills required in interactions with department staff, Nationwide Children's Hospital medical and nursing staff, other hospital employees, parents/guardians, other agencies and institutions and the public.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Must be able to see, hear, speak, read, and perform manual tasks with or without accommodation and care for oneself with little or no difficulty.

2. Must be able to apply the principles of body mechanics in lifting or moving patients and/or equipment.

3. Must be able to independently lift up to 50 pounds. Performance of principle duties and responsibilities may require the ability to travel.
