				Overview:

The Theisen Lab is recruiting a research associate in the Center for Childhood Cancer at Nationwide Children's Hospital.  We are a dynamic team that studies pediatric sarcomas, with a focus on genome regulation and experimental therapeutics. Our laboratory environment is highly collaborative and interdisciplinary, with both basic and translational projects at the intersection of cancer biology, biochemistry, genomics, epigenetics, and proteomics. This position will also serve as the laboratory manager, which requires maintaining equipment, ensuring laboratory safety, maintaining relevant documentation, and mentoring of junior lab members as needed. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, motivated, and able to independently carry out experiments in consultation with Dr. Theisen. 

We perform several innovative genomics and chromatin assays and are looking for a candidate with strong biochemistry and molecular biology skills with the ability to develop and troubleshoot protocols. Experience purifying proteins or performing epigenomics techniques will be considered favorably. Previous laboratory experience is required. This individual will conduct independent research projects designed in conjunction with a Principal Investigator; prepare position papers and research reports; assist in the preparation of scientific publications and research grant proposals; prepare budget proposals for conducting research studies; monitor research supply and inventory; initiate procurement requests; perform data analysis; oversee and maintain accurate records; prepare laboratory reports; assist with training junior members; and read and become familiar with the background literature. Superior organization and management skills are highly desired.

Responsibilities:

* Performs research experiments independently or semi-independently in accordance with protocols approved by the principal investigator.  Such experiments may involve the use of laboratory animals or human subjects any may occasionally require evening and/or weekend duties.
* Conducts common molecular biology assays, and prepares tissue cultures for use in research studies, as applicable.  Such activities may be performed independently and may require evening and weekend hours.
* Collects, analyzes, and interprets data in accordance with appropriate statistical procedures, and prepares reports, inclusive of graphs, tables, and photographs, of the results of studies.
* Collaborates and interacts with other researchers doing similar studies at NCH and at other research institutions.
* Prepares position papers about research studies including information about difficulties encountered in setting up and conducting research studies.
* Assists in the preparation of scientific publications and grant proposals with regard to a specific area of research.  Attends scientific conferences and gives scientific presentations.
* Serves as a resource person for other investigators and as a mentor to less experienced research personnel.
* Prepares budget proposals for supplies and equipment needed to conduct research.  Monitors study expenditures to assure that budgetary constraints are followed.
* Orders supplies needed to conduct research; maintains inventory of equipment and supplies; and assures that research equipment is in good working order.
* Responsible for maintenance of laboratory safety standards in conjunction with Research Safety teams including maintenance of chemical inventory, ensuring safety standards are upheld and lab passes annual safety inspection
* Maintains a clean working area and performs general laboratory maintenance.  Adheres to proper safety techniques and procedures.
* Performs miscellaneous related duties as required.
* Ability to learn and adapt new techniques

Qualifications:

Reports to: Principal Investigator.  

* Master of Science degree with one to two years of laboratory research experience or Bachelor of Science degree with two to three years of laboratory research experience.
* Must be able to use research methods in generating and collecting data and analyzing the data for report preparation
* Must be able to develop complex position papers and reports, and help in preparation of research grant proposals and scientific publications.
* Must be computer literate.
* Ability to collaborate with other scientists at NCH/OSU.
* Ability to work with Dr. Theisen to oversee day-to-day needs of the lab and manage ongoing projects.Contribute to regular group meetings and journal clubs.
* General experience with nucleic acids (DNA/RNA) and proteins, tissue culture, molecular biology techniques (cloning, PCR, immunoblotting, etc.), biochemistry, protein purification, and ability to follow and troubleshoot established protocols
* Experience or interest in learning genomics techniques and the basic bioinformatic requirements to process data including, ChIP-seq, CUT&RUN, CUT&Tag, ATAC-seq, Hi-C, RNA-seq
* Experience or interest in learning new proteomics techniques.
