				Overview:

The Research Animal Technician I is responsible for providing daily husbandry of laboratory animals. This includes feeding, watering, sanitation of animal enclosures, and administration of treatments. The Research Animal Technician I will be expected to work closely with Operational and Husbandry Managers, Veterinary Staff, Husbandry Leads, Researchers, and other Animal Resource Core Staff. All tasks are required to be accomplished in compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations. The position is expected to work holidays and weekends on a rotating assignment basis or as required by Management.

Responsibilities:

* Providing daily care and oversight to animals, primarily rodents, that are essential to support research goals of the Abigail Wexner Research Institute.
* Observing each cage of animals daily to assess health status of animals and ensuring there is an adequate supply of feed, water, and clean bedding or housing. This includes performing cage change of animal enclosures on routine basis. 
* Observing, reporting, and documenting animal health and associated responsibilities with exceptional attention to detail, including treatment of minor or common health issues. 
* Cleaning and maintaining laboratory facilities and equipment on a routine basis. 
* Reading, understanding, and executing tasks as per Institutional Standard Operating Procedures and Policies.
* Maintaining thorough written and verbal communication with Researchers, Veterinary Staff, Managers, and co-workers. 
* Must be able to display a high level of trust, work independently and as a team, and be motivated to provide exceptional animal care. 
* Ancillary Duties and Responsibilities: o Operating rack washers and autoclaves to sanitize or sterilize animal cages, racks, and other related equipment.
*  Identifying repairs and assists in troubleshooting and maintenance of racks, caging, and equipment. 
* Assists in observing and recording environmental and pest monitoring.

Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

* High School Diploma required with two years' relevant animal experience; Associate degree or higher preferred
* This position will be encouraged to achieve certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS), at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level, once AALAS length of employment eligibility requirements has been met.
* Maintains a working knowledge of the policies and procedures as outlined in the National Research Council's Guide for The Care and Use of Laboratory animals; the Animal Resources Core and The Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital Policies and SOPs.
* Ability to use Microsoft Office and Outlook. Minimum Physical Requirements:
* Must test negative or medical clearance for Tuberculosis on an annual basis
* Must have the ability to frequently bend and stoop and must be able to lift 50 lbs. to waist level.
* Must have a high degree of manual dexterity and ability to be on feet for most of the work shift.
