Overview: The Radiation Therapist delivers and accurately records the prescribed/planned course of radiation therapy to patients. Treats patients with care, respect and professionalism. Observes patients to see that physical, as well as emotional, needs are being met during treatment. Discusses with the physicians/nurses any concerns about the patients' needs or course of care. Troubleshoots problems with the accelerator or simulator and takes appropriate steps as necessary. Act as a resource for patients or patients' families with any questions or concerns regarding care. Responsibilities: Clinical Excellence/Patient Care * Delivers accurately the prescribed, planned course of radiation therapy. * Appropriately prepares the room and equipment for patient treatments and transfers patients safely. * Cuts custom-made Cerrobend blocks and electron cutouts when necessary. * Maintains working knowledge in the use of accelerators/simulators and other departmental equipment. * Troubleshoots minor problems with accelerator/simulator. Communicates problems to service representative, schedules time for repairs, and reschedules patients accordingly. * Performs quality control functions and demonstrates knowledge of instruments used. * Observes radiation safety measures for patients and department personnel. Development and Patient Education * Educates patients and families regarding procedures and treatments to be performed. * Acts as the liaison between patients and nurses and/or physicians with questions and concerns surrounding treatments and side effects. * Assesses patients and families' ongoing educational needs. Qualifications: Education: * Graduate of an ASRT approved program License(s)/Certification(s): * Current, unexpired ARRT registration * Current, unexpired Permit to Practice Radiation Therapy in the State of Iowa
