Provides and coordinates nursing care for patients, participates in patient and family teaching and provides leadership when working with other health team members to establish and maintain standards for professional nursing practice in the clinical setting.  Participates in unit-based shared leadership activities that improve the quality of care provided to patients and enhance the work environment.

Responsibilities:

* Assesses the needs of patients and families, providing appropriate teaching and making the necessary referrals to provide continuity of care.
* Develops an individual plan of care using a collaborative approach with the patient/family and health care team.
* Promptly completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patient's care.
* Delegates and provides direction for other healthcare providers and hold them accountable for their involvement in the plan of care.
* Assess and chooses teaching strategies appropriate to the patient's and their families' age specific needs, culture, gender, readiness to learn and level of comprehension.
* Consults appropriate resources within the hospital to provide specialized education.
* Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.

Qualifications:

Education:

* Graduate from and approved nursing program.

Experience:

* 3-5 Years Critical Care experience preferred.

License(s)/Certification(s):

* Current licensure in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in Iowa.
* Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or obtain certification within 30 days from date of hire. Advanced Coronary Life Support (ACLS) certification or obtain within six (6) months from hire.
PALS Certification or obtain within (6) months from hire. 
* Unit specific additional functions will be addressed in the competency checklist specific to the assigned unit. Additional certifications and requirements are unit based. 
* Must obtain and maintain NIHSS education within 90 days of hire and maintain every 2 years thereafter. Completion of 8 hours of Stroke education prior to the end of orientation and annually. 
* TNCC certification within 2 years. 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

* Machines: Pumps (IV, PCA, Epidural, Feeding), Chest tubes, Suction, IV's, Pulse Oximeter, Ventilators, CRRT.
* Administrative: Blood transfusion, ET, Infection Control, PT/OT, Inhaler, Order Entry, BLS, ACLS certification of hire.
