Overview: In addition to general nursing, is responsible for the delivery of safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care in the OR and other areas of perioperative services for all patient populations. Responsibilities: * Assesses patients at intervals as stated in policies and procedures. * Functions in the scrub and or circulating role during operative or other invasive procedures in accordance with scope of practice, credentials, privileges, education, and experience * Ensures the operative procedure is being performed on the correct patient and site, side and level by: Reviewing the operative schedule; Reviewing the operative consent; Verifying procedure site and side with patient; Resolving identified discrepancy with surgeon and patient, prior to the patient being taken to the operating room; and participating in the pre-procedure verification, per-incision "Time Out" and sign out process. * Develops an individualized perioperative patient plan of care. Implements the plan of care by: protecting the patient from injury caused by chemical, electrical, laser, mechanical, and thermal sources and extraneous objects; performing accounting procedures to protect the patient from unintended retained surgical items; performing interventions necessary to ensure that the patient's procedure is performed on the correct site, side, and level; managing the patient's specimens in the appropriate manner; communicating the patient's status to the appropriate parties throughout the continuum of care; administering medications safely and correctly; performing interventions to maintain the patient's wound and tissue perfusion at or above baseline levels; performing interventions to maintain the status of the patient's genitourinary, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological systems and fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balances at or above baseline levels; * Providing education regarding the expected psychosocial response, nutritional management, medication management, pain management, wound management, and expected responses to the operative or invasive procedure; * Actively involving the patient or designated support person in decisions affecting his or her perioperative plan of care and the rehabilitation process. * Documents nursing care accurately, completely, and legibly. * Collaborates effectively with other disciplines as appropriate. * Participates in quality review and performance improvement projects. * Uses problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationships with team members. * All other duties as requested. Qualifications: Education: Internal & 1199 SEIU: * Graduate of accredited nursing program(s). * Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred. Non 1199 SEIU Candidates: * Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. * Master's Degree in Nursing, preferred. Experience: * Minimum two (2) years' operating room experience. Knowledge and Skills: * Critical thinking, math, and computer skills. * Works as a team player. * Demonstrates respect and professionalism in all interactions. * Excellent oral and communication skills. * Decision making and problem solving. * Able to read, write, see and hear English. Licenses, Certifications: * Current NY State RN License required. * Basic Life Support (BLS) required. * Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) required. * Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required. * Certified Nurse, Operating Room (CNOR) certification, preferred. Physical Requirements: * Physically demanding, high-stress environment requiring prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day. * Position will be required to stoop, bend, lift and carry items weighing up to 35 pounds for routine performance of essential functions. * An individual in this position may be exposed to: Adverse indoor environmental conditions, Blood borne pathogens, Blood and body fluids, Physical hazards (e.g., needle pricks, etc.), communicable diseases, chemical hazards, radiation, and repetitive motions. * Full range of body motion, able to lift up to 100 pounds, if necessary, to assist lifting and moving patients. * Manual and finger dexterity, as well as hand and eye coordination. * Corrected vision and hearing to within normal range. * Frequently sitting at desk working on computer. * Ability to flex working hours.
