Overview: The RN will have a thorough understanding/knowledge all Stress Lab and Pacemaker Clinic procedures and equipment. Must have a comprehensive working knowledge of Cardiac Arrhythmias and advanced Cardiac Arrhythmias interpretation. The nurse will assess, prep, monitor, record procedural testing data, and initiate follow-up on all patient responses to stress testing. The nurse will coordinate and conduct all Pacemaker Clinic procedures to include: patient enrollment with a 'follow-up service', and checking/adjusting pacemaker setting using the manufacturer's programmer. Responsibilities: * Maintains applies standards of care in caring for patients with medical and surgical conditions/diagnosis. * Utilizes the nursing process in taking care of the patient. * Assesses condition of the patient and documents findings in EMR. * Utilizes principles of Infection Control in the delivery of care. * Implements appropriate nursing interventions to facilitate recovery of patient and prevent complications. * Evaluate patient's response to interventions and communicates with other healthcare team members the need to revise or maintain plan of care. * Assumes responsibility for all phases of patient testing and patient care in conjunction with physicians' requests. * Evaluates and assesses patients for total physical, physiological and clinical condition in relation to his/her disease using the spectrum of accepted measurement techniques and clinical assessments to determine if the patient is fit to undergo the physician ordered test. If there is a question of the patient's fitness, this is communicated to the physician. * Organizes the results of the assessment and effectively communicates these results to the patient. If necessary modifies existing protocol to assist individual needs of the patient. * Initiates appropriate actions effectively in an emergent situation. * Prioritizes tasks and adjusts priorities, maintain orderly, efficient, and timely flow of patients. * Starts' IV's as necessary and prepares equipment, secures electrodes and administers exercise test to a patient following established protocol. * Continuously evaluates the patient's progress, including all physiological and clinical parameters and records these interpretations as per protocol. * Assess patient's psychosocial status and needs including sleep patterns, anxiety, grief, anger and support systems. * Recognizes and reports errors or unusual occurrences, and initiates corrective action when appropriate. * Makes accurate, complete, and timely entries into the patient medical record addressing all steps of the nursing process. * Responds to lifesaving situations using current nursing standards and protocols for treatment. * Communicates with staff physician and other medical personnel to exchange information about patient's physiological, physical and emotion tolerance and achievement of test goals. * Start standard interventions to stabilize the patient. * Basic cardiac rhythm monitoring techniques, interpretation, and treatment. * Recognizes lethal arrhythmias and acts appropriately. Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology. * Recognize the signs and symptoms of cardiopulmonary and respiratory emergencies and knowing how to start standard interventions to stabilize the patient. * Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy. * Calculate drug dosage, administering continuous medication infusion, and monitoring patients for effects of medication. * Applies policy of HIPPA Regulations/Patient confidentiality by safeguarding the Protected Health Information (PHI). * Collect specimens for lab tests. * Prepares equipment and assists physician during examination and treatment/procedures of patient at the bedside. * Initiates patient education plan, as prescribed by physician. Teach patients and significant others how to manage their illness/injury, by explaining: post-treatment home care needs, diet/nutrition/exercise programs, self-administration of medication and rehabilitation. * Performs Stress Testing for both Inpatients and Out Patients. Assist during TEE; assist with Cardioversion (Inpatient and Out patients); assist with stress TEES- N5-10; assist with tilt table testing and other non-invasive procedures. * Coordinates scheduling of patients. Receives and provides handoff. * Provides nursing care in consideration of patient's culture and ethnic affiliation. * Maintains competency and updates knowledge of standards of practice in critical care nurse scope of practice. * Consistently applies the Mission, Vision, and core values of Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center. * Applies the philosophy, mission, and vision of the nursing department. * Maintains current nursing knowledge to assure a safe working environment. * Participates in assigned departmental or organizational committees, meetings and/or conferences. * Participates in the department's performance improvement initiatives to continuously improve the quality of patient care. * Participates in the formulation, review and or revision of departmental policies. * Ensures that equipment and devices are properly stores after use. * Identifies and reports malfunctioning equipment /device. * Demonstrates efforts in the prevention of hospital acquired conditions (HAC) and falls. * Performs other duties as assigned within the RN scope of practice. Qualifications: Education: Internal & 1199 SEIU: * Graduate of accredited nursing program(s). * Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred. Non 1199 SEIU Candidates: * Bachelor's degree in Nursing or equivalent to BSN program. * Master's degree in Nursing, preferred. Experience: * Minimum two (2) years' in a Cardio diagnosstic laboratory. Knowledge and Skills: * Knowledge of critical lab values and takes appropriate nursing actions when indicated. * Critical thinking, math, and computer skills; Works as a team player. * Demonstrates respect and professionalism in all interactions. * Excellent oral and communication skills. * Decision making and problem solving. * Able to read, write, see and hear English. Licenses, Certifications: * Current NY State RN License, required. * Basic Life Support (BLS) required. * Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) required. * Basic Arrhytmia Class with Certification required. Physical Requirements: * Physically demanding, high-stress environment requiring prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day. * Position will be required to stoops, bends, lifts, carry items weighing up to 35 pounds for routine performance of essential functions. * An individual in this position may be exposed to: Adverse indoor environmental conditions, Blood borne pathogens, Blood and body fluids, Physical hazards (e.g., needle pricks, etc.), communicable diseases, chemical hazards, radiation, and repetitive motions. * Full range of body motion, able to lift up to 100 pounds, if necessary, to assist lifting and moving patients. * Manual and finger dexterity, as well as hand and eye coordination. * Corrected vision and hearing to within normal range * Frequently sitting at desk working on computer * Ability to flex working hours.
