Overview: Shift: Full-Time, 9:00 am - 9:00 pm, for 72 hours per pay period. There is a holiday and a every third weekend rotation. The RN Clinical Support Nurse respond to ever changing resource requirements to meet patient, nursing and operational needs across all areas of hospital. Using Benner's Novice to Expert model as a framework, this role uses a highly proficient or expert nurse as a clinical resource to meet patient and operational needs, provide advanced skills and care, and support for nurses and team members to develop their practice. This role requires a high level of flexibility, initiative and problem solving on a day-to-day basis. While in this role, the nurse will not normally assume a routine patient assignment, however under certain circumstances a patient assignment may be appropriate. Responsibilities: Clinical Excellence and Proficient/ Expert Nursing Practice: * Coordinates activities with other team members in planning and implementing care as directed by the house supervisor or with independent initiative to meet needs of hospital and patients. * Demonstrates initiative to improve quality and customer service by striving to exceed customer expectations, participating in clinical and process improvement projects, pilots and implementation as well as independently perform quality related clinical and EMR audits as needed. * Demonstrates initiative and ability to role model and coach nurses and other team members on nursing practice, skill development, and FOCUS values. * Demonstrate initiative and competency to learn, maintain and implement a wide variety of skills such as PICC line placement, wound vac care, critical care skills including sedation and transporting critical care patients and other skills as needed as healthcare changes and the role evolves. * Demonstrate initiative, flexibility and excellent time management to respond to patient and staff needs to ensure optimal hospital operations. * Demonstrates peer to peer leadership by supporting change management, being a resource or superuser as requested or assigned, participating in nursing activities such as staff meetings, nursing councils or organizational committees and supporting organization strategies and goals. Clinical Excellence/Patient Care: * Assess the needs of patients and families, providing appropriate teaching and making necessary referrals to provide continuity of care. * Develops an individual plan of care using a collaborative approach with the patient/family and health care team. * Promptly completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patient's care. * Delivers high quality care utilizing the nursing process while demonstrating knowledge and clinical skills of the specialty required on assigned unit in accordance with established policies, procedures and standards of care. * Utilizes a holistic approach (considering biopsychosocial, spiritual, educational, safety and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients and families served in the assigned service area. * Delegates and provides direction for other healthcare team members within their scope of practice and hold them accountable for their involvement in the plan of care. * Utilizes critical thinking in developing nursing interventions while maintaining responsibilities and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients. Clinical Excellence and Patient Education: * Assess and Chooses teaching strategies appropriate to the patient's and their families' age specific needs, culture, gender, readiness to learn and level of comprehension. * Consults appropriate resources within the hospital to provide specialized education. * Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately. Committed Team: * Utilizes supply items in a cost-effective manner, recognizing when to reorder, and assisting with unpacking and/or restocking items. * May be responsible for clerical duties such as answering phones, collecting consents and transcription. * Attends department huddles, staff meetings and other required training. * Checks emails regularly for important communications relevant to assignment. Qualifications: Education: * Graduate of an accredited nursing program. (Must obtain BSN within 12 years of hire date) Work Experience: * Five (5) or more years of RN experience * RN experience in medical/surgical nursing * Precepting nurses new to nursing and/or unit Certification/License: * Current licensure in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in Iowa * Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or within three (3) months of hire * Obtain and maintain Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) * Obtain and maintain Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification within six (6) months of hire
