Job Summary:

The Preconstruction Engineer assists and supports the progress of existing preconstruction projects to ensure Skanska is completing its work accurately and efficiently. The position works under direct supervision, performs daily estimating and planning activities and organizes and disseminates information applicable to the planning efforts. The Preconstruction Engineer must be able to meet critical deadlines, accurately obtain quantities for building components and have the ability to work as part of a team.

Duties and Responsibilities:  

*      Participate as a member of a multi-disciplinary team fulfilling assignments so that we may advise our clients during the preconstruction services phase. 
* Read and interpret drawings and specifications.
* Quantify architectural, structural, civil elements of a project where the design is complete or near completion. If MEP Discipline, same
* Develops knowledge of construction pricing and applies pricing to quantities surveyed.
* Utilizes estimating technology systems to quantify, organize and price assigned work.
* Develop estimate clarifications that accurately describe what is included or excluded from the estimate.
* Participates with estimating staff learning the basics of value management.
* Will utilize design model software to perform quantity extraction for use in estimating.
* Evaluates detailed designs from other projects, you will develop an understanding of conceptual estimating.
* Networks with applicable subcontractors in discipline expertise areas for the purpose of building relationships, obtaining estimate input, preliminary bids, and product information.
* Will receive, analyze, and complete bid comparisons in assigned discipline areas.
* Present and defend their work to the Skanska project leadership team.
* Achieve assigned training goals for the Preconstruction Engineer position. 
* Meeting assigned deadlines thru effective time management and prioritizing assignments.

* Seeking clarity and asking questions to confirm their understanding of the assigned work.

* Communicating with the project team, their supervisor and external stakeholders to share and collect information in support of the preconstruction work.
* As a Precon Engineer, this position requires regular and consistent attendance in the office to attend scheduled and ad hoc team and cross-functional collaboration meetings.

Education and Experience: 

Required Qualifications: 

* Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Excel, Microsoft Word, and PowerPoint.
* Geometry - proficiency in measures of length, area and volume calculations.  
* Bachelor's Degree - Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management or equivalent/applicable degree; or 8 years prior relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications: 

* Relevant industry experience through either college internships or full-time employment in commercial construction. 

Competencies / Skills: 

Has demonstrated proficiency in:

*  Market Knowledge: Utilizes local, national and global market conditions and trends when planning and estimating projects.

*  Subcontractor Outreach / Networking: Builds, maintains, and tracks relationships with subcontractors and vendors. Identifies appropriate subcontractors for specific projects, with a consideration of the project type, sector and size, as well as the subcontractor strengths and capabilities. Collaborates with regional diversity leadership to develop and implement strategies to maximize diverse and minority owned business participation.

*  Quantification: Identifies and quantifies building systems, materials, and assemblies for elements of a project using design documents. Organizes quantity takeoffs for ease of review.

*  Subcontractor Purchasing Process: Prepares scopes of work for trade contractors, develops bid packages, and conducts post-bid analysis interviews and comparisons.

*  Tools and Technology - Preconstruction Building: Identifies and uses the appropriate preconstruction and visualization technology, equipment and tools for planning and estimating (e.g., quantity take-off software, estimating software, BIM models).

Has a basic understanding of:

*  Plans and Specifications - Estimating: Reads and interprets construction plans and the technical specifications that enable the ability to perform estimating duties.

*  Detailed Design Estimating: Applies knowledge of technical building fields such as electrical, mechanical, and architectural, structural, and civil systems to prepare detailed construction cost estimates including all necessary material, equipment and labor from developed design information.

Travel Requirements: Less than 10%

Work Environment/Conditions: This job is performed both in the office (+/-90%) and in the field (+/-10%) on an active construction site. Field work requires experience and confidence working in and around heavy industrial equipment and systems, which includes average to loud noises, ability to traverse uneven grounds, and possible outdoor weather conditions. Vision requires the capacity for close and far vision, the ability to adjust focus, depth perception and peripheral vision. Activities and responsibilities require frequent sitting (often working on a computer), frequent driving, flying, walking, standing, light lifting, bending, and reaching. Due to computer usage, there may be repetitive motions of the hands and wrists.
