				Overview:

A registered polysomnographic technologist works under the general supervision of the department manager/lead tech to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient care and direct patient education. The registered polysomnographic technologist is credentialed in sleep technology by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT).

Responsibilities:

  Performs polysomnograms according to standards of department.

  Demonstrates competency in the following procedures, Polysomnography, baseline, split-night and PAP titration, MSLT, and MWT. Has the basic knowledge of the following disorders but is not limited to, sleep apnea, hypopnea, respiratory effort related arousal, and sleep physiology examinations, narcolepsy, hypersomnolence, parasomnias, seizures, gastric reflux, continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure

examinations, insomnia, hypersomnia, parasomnia versus apnea, seizures versus

apnea, and documentation of events.

  Administers oxygen (in accordance to physician orders) and/or nasal CPAP/BiPAP according to department procedure. Instructs patient on the proper use and care of the equipment.

  Writes a comprehensive report on findings of the polysomnogram to include treatment levels (if used).

  Maintains, cleans, calibrates, and troubleshoots the equipment to enhance the operation of each instrument.

  Collects and/or reviews medical, historical, and medication information in order to perform the appropriate study prescribed by the physician.

  Assumes responsibility for performing all types of neurodiagnostic testing for adolescent and adult patients and sleep disorder testing procedures for adolescent, and adult patients

  Evaluates patients' and significant others' educational needs and initiates and implements appropriate teaching or makes appropriate referrals.

Qualifications:

Education:

Diploma or degree in college level science field of polysomnography, electroneurodiagnostics or completion of degree and licensure in health care.

Experience:

Six months experience in Sleep Disorders Center preferred.

License(s)/Certification(s):

Registered Polysomnographic Technician or registry eligible. 

Board certified by the Board of Registration of Polysomnographic Technologist (BRPT) must be obtained within first year of employment. 

Must become Iowa Licensed in Polysomnographic Technology under the regulations set forth in Iowa House File 203.

Ability to exercise good judgment, maintain good interpersonal relationships, adapt to change in a positive manner and think creatively. Possesses integrity, initiative and flexibility. Completion of Hospital and departmental orientation with related competencies completed. Ability to organize work. Must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to infant, pediatric, young/middle/mature adult patients.
