Overview: Under the direction of the Manager and Supervisor, in collaboration with Coordinator of Safe Patient Handling, ensures patients are appropriately mobilized by assisting staff with ambulation, transfers and repositioning patients. Promotes employee and patient safety and mobility by assisting, modeling and educating team members on the appropriate method and manner of patient positioning and ambulation using proper lift equipment and technique. Responsibilities: Clinical Excellence/Patient Care * Contributes toward accomplishment of patient's Plan of Care goals by providing mobility activities as assigned by the nurse. * Provides assistance to persons served and their family to learn to safely manage personal care while increasing activity, strength, and endurance. * Effectively works with the patient and their support team, reinforcing therapy and therapy/mobility initiatives. * Effectively communicates changes in patient condition and functional ability to support an expedited change in the patient's plan of care and prevention of more serious complications. * Demonstrates the knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately. * Utilizes a holistic approach (considering physical, psych/social, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients served in the assigned service area. * Demonstrates initiative to improve quality and customer service. * Demonstrates understanding of level of care regulatory requirements in daily responsibilities and tasks. * Balances team and individual responsibilities, objective and open to other's views, gives and welcomes feedback, contributes to positive team goals, puts success of team above own interest. * Demonstrates ability to consistently meet the department work schedule. * Promotes professional rehabilitation/mobility objectives among interdisciplinary team members. * Participates in process improvement for enhancement of care delivery and clinical excellence. * Demonstrates competence in the implementation/administration of age-appropriate care in accordance with established Practice Guidelines, Policies/Procedures and State/Federal Law in regard to hygiene, nutritional, elimination, and activity measures as well as non-sterile/non-invasive procedures, oxygen setup, simple dressings, traction set-up, blood glucose testing, measuring and recording vital signs and non-sterile specimen collection. * Promptly completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patient's care. * Promotes, monitors and maintains a safe clean environment by assisting with identifying safety needs of patients and modifying the environment to meet these needs, perform light housekeeping functions to maintain a clean, neat and orderly work/patient care area, adhering to established Universal/Standard precautions. * Contributes effectively to the communication needs of the department by acknowledging patients, healthcare providers and visitors upon arrival to the unit, engaging in collaborative communication, identifying and reporting patient care concerns in a timely manner, practicing excellent telephone etiquette. * Assist with cleaning/inventorying mobility equipment, retrieving and recommend ordering supplies. * Exhibits flexibility with assignments including hours of operation and location to meet business and customer needs. * Assist with Safe Patient Handling education. * Practices will reflect Safe Patient Handling standards. Qualifications: Education: High School Diploma or equivalent Experience: License(s)/Certification(s): Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons. * Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or obtain certification within three (3) months from date of hire. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English. Multicultural sensitivity. Microsoft Office - basic computer skills. Customer/patient focused. Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions. Other: Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position. Work will require travel within Des Moines region (Iowa Lutheran, Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Methodist West).
