				Overview:

The Superintendent of Trades is responsible for overseeing all skilled trade operations within the Boston Parks and Recreation Department. This role directs and coordinates the work of a multi-trades team, including carpenters, painters, welders, electricians, and plumbers, to ensure the efficient maintenance, repair, and installation of park infrastructure. The Superintendent ensures that all activities meet high standards of safety, quality, and compliance with city policies while supporting the overall mission of preserving and enhancing Boston's public parks and recreational spaces.

Responsibilities:

* Supervise, schedule, and evaluate a diverse team of skilled tradespeople.
* Assign and prioritize work orders for timely completion of maintenance and installation projects.
* Manage and direct the General Foreperson, Forepersons, and trade staff in the maintenance of park facilities, buildings, athletic fields, irrigation systems, spray features, and more.
* Conduct staff meetings, coordinate training, and enforce safety protocols and city standards.
* Develop, implement, and monitor preventive maintenance and repair schedules.
* Manage emergency responses for infrastructure failures and coordinate urgent repairs.
* Oversee procurement and inventory of trade-related materials, tools, and equipment.
* Ensure quality control and compliance on work completed by both staff and contractors.
* Maintain records and reports related to timekeeping, equipment use, project costs, and scheduling.
* Collaborate with other city departments, vendors, and community partners on park improvement projects.
* Respond to public inquiries and complaints and ensure timely resolutions.
* Manage the department's Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and GIS-based asset tracking systems.
* Train staff in the use of digital work order and asset tracking tools.
* Analyze maintenance data and produce reports on workforce performance, trends, and resource allocation.
* Ensure adherence to city and departmental policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
* Perform related work as required.

Qualifications:

* At least four (4) years of paid experience in Park Maintenance or related field, of which two (2) years must have been in a supervisory capacity.
* A High School Diploma or equivalent is required. A college degree in Park Management or a related field may be substituted for the two (2) years of supervisory experience.
* Demonstrated experience supervising skilled trade teams in a municipal, construction, or facilities maintenance setting.
* Strong knowledge of practices and materials used in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, welding, and irrigation systems.
* Proven ability to manage complex maintenance operations across a large, geographically dispersed network of public facilities.
* Familiarity with CMMS and GIS systems for tracking work orders and asset management.
* Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
* Ability to coordinate and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including the public.
* Experience managing budgets, materials procurement, and vendor contracts is a plus.
* Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Trade or technical certification/licensure in one or more trades (e.g., plumbing, electrical).
* OSHA safety training or similar certifications.
* Working knowledge of union labor practices and civil service guidelines.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and maintenance management software.
