Overview:
Must reside in the state of WA, ID, or OR.
Under supervision, assists the cancer program and cancer committee in meeting criteria as set forth under the American College of Surgeons Commission (ACoS) on Cancer for an approved cancer program. Identifies, abstracts, and maintains records of patients treated for reportable diagnoses at identified facilities to provide data for physicians, research studies, and other organizations utilizing a cancer registry data system. Provides quality controls during the data collection activity of abstraction. Analyzes data and disseminates information within established guidelines.
Position Reports To: Manager - Quality Reporting
Responsibilities:
* Identifies, compiles and maintains records of applicable patients treated for cancer to provide data for physicians, administration, research studies, or other requested use utilizing cancer registry data system or other relevant resources. Reviews medical center and hospital records to identify and compile patient data for use in cancer management program and to comply with government regulations and ACoS guidelines.
* Reviews, abstracts and codes data information, including patient demographics, history and extent of disease, diagnostic procedures, treatment, follow-up, physician, and related information from medical records and other required sources. Information is entered into the database according to strict protocol requirements, according to ACoS guidelines.
* Reviews data for completeness and accuracy and provides lifetime follow up with data sources as necessary required by facility and ACoS guidelines, in order to maintain follow-up information, such as quality of life and length of survival of cancer patients. Makes corrections in database as identified through quality control process.
* Utilizes case-finding sources, including, but not limited to: hospital disease index, Pathology department reports, Radiology department Reports, to identify reportable cases of cancer.
* Researches and identifies cases for special projects and studies. Reviews incoming data documentation and performs re-abstracting and case finding for special projects as assigned.
* Prepares statistical reports, narrative reports and graphic presentation of cancer registry data for use by hospital staff, researchers and other users of registry data. Responds accurately, professionally and in a timely manner to all requests for data, special studies and research projects.
* Performs data analysis and prepares reports within protocol parameters of the study and other guidelines. Educates staff on study requirements, data collection methodology. Provides input into study planning and coordinates data collection activities with investigator requirements.
* Provides feedback to medical staff and administration on quality issues. Educates medical staff and administration on ACoS requirements and aids in implementation in these requirements. Assists the Cancer Committee in developing criteria for quality improvement and patient care evaluations.
* Assists Lead Oncology Data Specialist in Clinical Cancer Conference and Cancer Committee and helps to assure the meetings are conducted according to ACoS requirements. Responsible for specific duties for Clinical Cancer Conference and Cancer Committee as assigned.
* Assure data meets reporting requirements for the ACoS, the National Cancer Data Base (NCDB) and the Washington State Cancer Registry (WSCR) with timely reporting to these entities.
* Assists with the ACoS Cancer Program Survey with updates of required data and information on a timely basis and maintains the policies and procedure for the cancer registry and other pertinent cancer program functions.
* Works with Lead Oncology Data Specialist in establishing and maintaining cancer registry policies, procedures, objectives and quality assurance.
* Participates in educational activities required to maintain ODS credentials.
* Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Required:
* Associate's Degree.
* 3 years of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified; or 2 years medical related college or technical course and 1 year experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
* Knowledge of AJCC (T,N,M) Staging.
* Knowledge of reportable cancer diagnoses and treatments.
* Knowledge of State and Federal regulations related to Cancer Care.
* Oncology Data Specialist licensure (Nation Cancer Registrar's Association).
