				Overview:

The Nurse Manager is responsible for 24/7 oversight and clinical supervision of nursing staff. The manager is clinically and administratively responsible for the day-to-day oversight of all activities within the service in collaboration with the Director of Nursing/Psychiatry, to ensure delivery of quality patient care, consistent with regulatory agency standards, organizational policies, and evidence-based approaches.

Responsibilities:

* Leads, motivates, and mentors staff to maximize staff and patient satisfaction.
* Establishes and maintains positive relationships with patients, visitors, multi-disciplinary team members, and other employees. Interacts professionally, courteously, and appropriately with patients, visitors, and multi-disciplinary team members. Behaves in a manner consistent with maintaining and furthering a positive, public perception of Brookdale Hospital and its employees.  Partners with physician leadership to optimize successful outcomes.
* Responsible for the implementation and staff's adherence to hospital policies and procedures, in addition to regulatory agencies' codes and regulations.
* Responsible for operations and management of the unit in collaboration with the Director of Nursing/Psychiatry.
* Assumes overall responsibility for unit operations. Monitors and addresses time/attendance and performance matters of subordinates per organizational policies.
* Coordinates all performance improvement activities. Utilizes appropriate benchmarks. Posts data on unit.
* Assembles and prepares data relative to clinical activities as well as other statistical and special reports required by the NYS Office of Mental Health (OMH), the NY Department of Health (KOH), the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), and the Administration for Children's Services (ACS) - as Applicable.
* Responsible for unit staffing to ensure adequate coverage. Approves requests for time off/vacation. Prepares/approves unit schedules.
* Responds to requests from inter-departmental units and external regulatory agencies for records and assistance - ex: NYS Justice Center/OMH.
* Participates in incident reviews and root-cause-analysis.
* Reviews and monitors admissions and discharges to ensure appropriate clinical management and discharge planning.
* Responsible for gathering performance improvement data, gathering information and meeting compliance standards for regulatory agency surveys, including DOH, and the Joint Commission.
* Maintains continuous survey readiness.
* Monitors budgeting supplies and inventory. Ensures unit is appropriately stocked. Monitors functionality of equipment.
* Responsible for ensuring that all PCS Scope of service, Philosophy of Nursing and Ethical standards are met.
* Prepares performance appraisals for subordinate staff. Ensures staff competencies are met.
* Provides administrative coverage for the Nursing Department when necessary. Cross-covers other units during periods of absence/vacation.
* Encourages continuing education for subordinate staff to increase administrative and clinical knowledge.
* Implements best care practices.
* Assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Nursing/Psychiatry and/ or Sr. Vice President for Patient Care Services.

Qualifications:

Education:

* Graduate of accredited Nursing school BSN.
* Master's Degree in Nursing preferred.

Experience:

* Minimum five (5) years as a Registered Nurse required
* Minimum two (2) years experience in inpatient/emergency psychiatric nursing
* Minimum two (2) years experience in a leadership role required

Knowledge and Skills:

* Critical thinking, math, and computer skills; Works as a team player
* Monitors and facilitates the meeting of requirements of NYSDOH, The Joint Commission and other regulatory agencies
* Knowledge of quality improvement philosophy models, processes and tools and their use in health care integrated settings.  Maintains currency with state of the art and regulatory trends
* Knowledge of methods for CQI, and Root Cause Analysis
* Monitors and facilitates the meeting of requirements of NYSDOH, JCAHO and other regulators
* Demonstrates respect and professionalism in all interactions
* Demonstrates competence in leadership, budgetary and administrative skills
* Demonstrates a commitment to continuing professional growth and development
* Excellent oral and communication skills
* Experience and demonstrated competency in applicable clinical specialty
* Decision making and problem solving
* Able to read, write, see and hear English
* Ability to fully utilize BHMC's electronic record systems, equipment and healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position

Licenses, Certifications:

* Licensed and currently registered as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State required
* Basic Life Support (BLS) required
* BLS required for adult inpatient psychiatry - Aaron 5 and Aaron 6
* BLS, ACLS and PALS required for Adult and Child CPEP/CCPEP (to be obtained within three months of hire)
* Certified in area of Specialty preferred

Physical Requirements:

* May require prolonged periods of standing, reaching, and walking
* Functions well under stressful circumstances - directs subordinate staff during potentially stressful physical and emotional events  
* Position may be required to stoop, bend, lift, carry items weighing up to 35 pounds
* An individual in this position may be exposed to: Adverse indoor environmental conditions, Blood borne pathogens, Blood and bodily fluids, Physical hazards (e.g., needle sticks, etc.), communicable diseases, chemical hazards, and repetitive motions
* Full range of body motion
* Manual and finger dexterity, as well as hand and eye coordination.
* Corrected vision and hearing to within normal range
* Ability to be seated at desk working on computer
* Ability to flex working hours
* On call as needed
