The American Heart Association has an outstanding opportunity for a National VP, Research and Grants Administration in our Science department!

This position can be home-based.

This individual will develop and facilitate strategic planning to drive the American Heart Association's research mission and will direct, manage, and develop staff to meet the Research department and American Heart Association goals.

It will be crucial to remain on the cutting edge of factors and influences impacting research-granting organizations in general and non-profit organizations specifically.

Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership:

* Stay at the forefront of emerging trends and influences affecting research-granting organizations, particularly within the non-profit sector.
* Lead the strategy, policy, and operations for the Association's research enterprise, ensuring it remains at the forefront of the health non-profit research field.
* Develop and facilitate strategic planning to drive the research mission.
* Share and discuss with nationwide scientists the funding opportunities of the Association.

Program Management:

* Plan, direct, budget, and implement existing and new research programs, including all aspects of research program promotions, application, peer review, award processes, and compliance.
* Oversee the development and implementation of the association-wide research program through applicants and awardee evaluation and engagement with the national Research Committee and key volunteers.
* Develop research policies, procedures, practices, and structural components to ensure compliance with established standards.

Financial Oversight:

* Manage the departmental budget and revenue sources, explore new revenue opportunities, and ensure financial goals are met or exceeded.
* Ensure budgetary responsibility is upheld.

Staff and Volunteer Management:

* Direct, manage, and develop staff to meet the goals of the Research department and the American Heart Association.
* Staff the Research Committee and other research volunteer groups (task forces, working groups, committees).
* Represent the American Heart Association Research enterprise as an expert voice to volunteer groups and external audiences, such as other funders and research-focused organizations.

Collaboration and Compliance:

* Advise and collaborate with other teams in the organization to develop donor-supported requests for research funding and oversee their implementation, including priority funding for the strategic research agenda, and identifying and fostering opportunities developed with the Association's research support.
* Maintain broad knowledge of all aspects of research program promotions, application processes, peer review, and post-award processes.
* Perform other duties as required or assigned within the scope and responsibility of the job level and family.

Qualifications:

* PhD or MD in biomedical, biological, public health, or related discipline.
* Requires eight (8) years minimum prior relevant research experience and at least seven (7) years of supervisory experience in the research domain.
* Experience in planning, budgeting, assigning, directing, coordinating, and reviewing research work.
* Proven strategic planning experience.
* Prior experience in the administration/management of others.
* Must have strong written and oral communication skills.
* Experience in volunteer management.
* Understanding and appreciation for the use of technology and information systems.
* Staff position experience in a not-for-profit and/or government sector, or medical center/university research office.
* Must be able to travel overnight, approximately 20% of the time.

Preferred Experience:

* Ten (10) years minimum prior relevant experience and at least eight (8) years of supervisory experience.
* Experience working with an active committee/Board/officer member in a professional member society.
