Overview:
Works under the supervision of the Pathology Laboratory Manager. The Molecular Technician prepares and performs molecular testing. The technician also prepares cytologic specimens and assists in fine needle aspirate specimen collection. The Molecular Technician is responsible for transporting specimens, documenting receipt, processing specimens, preparing specimens for testing and entering patient and specimen information into the Anatomic Pathology computer system. The Technician serves as a primary link for the laboratory and interacts with physicians, guests, patients, family members, and other Medical Center staff to obtain or clarify information for laboratory records. Must have excellent prioritization skills, ability to manage multiple tasks and excellent customer service skills. Assist Pathology Laboratory Manager in assuring department meets all standards for CAP, JCAHO, OSHA, Infection Control, Safety and NHRMC Standards. Must have skills to assist in teaching, assessing and training of staff and students. Other functions to be performed include clerical, telephone and computer entry. The initial competency assessment should be done six months post training, and annually thereafter. Qualifications:
* Education:4 Year / Bachelors Degree, required. BS in Cytology, Histology, Molecular Pathology or related biological science, OR 60 semester hours including either 24 semester hours of medical laboratory courses or 24 semester hours of science courses (6 hours chemistry; 6 hours biology; and 12 hours in chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology, or any combination).
* Experience: One to two years laboratory experience (clinical internships of 12 months duration meet this requirement), preferred.
* Licensure/Certification: ASCP or AMT certification, preferred.
