Overview:
Medical Lab Scientist
Location: Winston-Salem NC
Dept: Hematology Clinic
Position: Full Time, Monday-Friday
This position will cover a unique combination of responsibilities for the cell therapy department that includes medical science and nursing adjacent duties. This role will have less involvement in testing but will require critical documentation skills and handling of blood products. The primary responsibilities will include shipping of apheresis collections, receipt and handling of cryopreserved stem cell products, preparation of cells for transplant, and inventory management of the products in liquid nitrogen storage. The hybrid portion of the role will include assisting the Apheresis nursing team with collection tasks including operation of the Optia machine.
Nursing related duties include:
Selects proper material for blood collection
Performs venipuncture on eligible donors
Strives to collect donor at highest possible yield
Chooses appropriate collection procedure based on donor restraints and inventory needs
Provides supportive care and documentation for donor reactions
Strips, seals, and packs units for transport/storage
Administers post-phlebotomy care
Provides supportive care and documentation for donor reactions
Keeps donor area stocked with required materials/equipment needed to adequately screen and collect donors
Performs blood collection according to SOP, FDA regulations and FACT/AABB standards
Performs and documents quality control for designated blood collection equipment
Tags and reports defective equipment per SOP and if required, pulls defective equipment from service
Greets each donor and/or donor contact in friendly professional manner
Additional skills include:
Ability to follow SOP in a heavily FDA regulated environment
Ability to communicate effectively, tactfully, and courteously to patrons, donors, sponsors, and co-workers
Ability to work with all levels and in a diverse work environment
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, management, and peers
Active CNA license or nursing experience preferred but not required.
Qualifications:
Education: 4 Year / Bachelors Degree, required. Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or chemical, physical, or biological science or equivalent. Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Medical Technology or MT program Preferred. If graduated before 1987, two-year certification is recognized as MT.
Experience: Medical Laboratory Scientist: Four years of relevant Laboratory experience, preferred. Minimum three years of experience as laboratory scientist including two years with moderate complexity testing, OR Minimum two years of experience with oversight of point of care testing, required.
Licensure/Certification: Scientist Cert from ASCP or AMT (BB, C, H, MT/MLS, M, MB), required.

Clinical Laboratory:
* All individuals who are newly certified ASCP beginning January 1, 2004, must participate and maintain ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) through the Certification Maintenance Program (CMP). All individuals who are newly certified AMT beginning January 1, 2006, must participate and maintain AMT Certification Continuation Program (CCP).
* Knowledge of current medical terminology to perform full range of laboratory tests and communicate with medical staff regarding laboratory procedures and results.
* Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to perform quality control checks and troubleshooting of instrumentation.
* Skill in performing a full range of laboratory tests.
* Skill in anticipating and reacting calmly to emergency situations.
* Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance.
* Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, hospital staff and the public.
* Ability to read and understand information about instrumentation in laboratory field.
* Ability to follow written protocols.
* Ability to work independently.
* Ability to communicate clearly.
* Point of Care:

* Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint as well as Adobe. Possesses knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
* Additional Skills/Requirements (preferred: Specialist certifications from accreditation agencies.
