Responsibilities:
Customer Service: Greets patients, visitors, and other team members in a friendly and professional manner. Responds to inquiries regarding testing status updates, additional testing, problem resolution, etc. in a professional and courteous manner. Recognizes and promotes interdependencies with other areas. Interfaces and communicates with clients to troubleshoot, investigate, and ensure order accuracy. Promptly answers phone calls and redirects as appropriate. Models an understanding of diversity by creating and maintaining an environment that supports and respects diversity. Recognizes and values the unique differences and similarities in both our team members and patients to create an inclusive environment where diversity is celebrated. Acts with honesty and integrity with team members and stakeholders, showing and speaking with respect for the rights of others, human dignity, various cultures, and Novant Health's mission, vision, and values. Gains customer confidence through competence, effective communication, and trust building behaviors. Explain all processes to patients in plain language. Documentation: Ensures all appropriate documentation is complete and included on the patient chart in accordance with federal, state, and laboratory regulatory requirements. Processes requisitions for testing and completes all documentation requirements in the electronic health record. Research specimen requirements for rare analysis. Monitors pending worklists and follow up lists, as necessary. Prepares and distributes reports as needed.
Specimen Processing, Handling & Safety: Complies with positive patient identification standards. When required of the role, performs appropriate collection techniques per test specifications and promptly responds to unexpected patient reactions to specimen collection procedures. Wears personal protective equipment and complies with all laboratory safety standards. Complies with laboratory standards for specimen labeling and transport. Promptly reports safety concerns, incidents, or variances to leader. Safely handles and disposes of sharps, biohazardous materials and chemicals. Receives and processes provider orders for laboratory procedures. Verifies that patient, order, and specimen information is complete and correct; accurately and efficiently inputs patient and specimen information into the electronic health record; organizes work and performs order entry of specimens received to meet established turnaround times. Performs test-specific processing services accurately and efficiently as needed. Maintains specimen integrity requirements at all times while utilizing pre-analytical procedures including but not limited to: centrifugation, aliquoting, and storage techniques.
Laboratory Testing: May perform point of care or waived to moderate complexity testing, in facilities where applicable. Complies with all applicable procedures and quality control standards.
Quality Improvement: Complies with all organizational policies and procedures. Demonstrates personal commitment to continuous quality improvement through active participation. Organizes and manages time effectively to optimize productivity. Responsible for resolving workqueues and follow up worklists in electronic health record. Reports trends and issues to leader.
Education: Maintains satisfactory attendance at all educational and department meetings, as required. Successfully completes continuing education activities to continually improve skills. Participates in ongoing training and updates pertaining to pre-analytical laboratory procedures. Performs all duties to satisfy regulations in preparation for inspections.
Operations Management: Practices efficient use of supplies and materials. Responsible for monitoring inventory of supplies and materials, and to communicate needs to leadership.
Teamwork and Communication: Work within a team to achieve patient and team goals. Share and initiate regular and professional communication with co-workers. Regularly reviews departmental and organizational communications. Participates in regular staff meetings. Identifies opportunities to improve processes based on feedback from staff and customers. May participate in training of students and new team members as needed.
Operational: Team member must possess sufficient motor skill and manual dexterity to obtain and manipulate specimens in a manner that does not endanger themselves and others when working with combative patients. Must have excellent prioritization skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks.
Professional: Possesses ability to accept change in a positive manner and implement change with positive results. Demonstrates a positive image of a caring and concerned organization at all times. Maintains composure in difficult situations. Uses best judgment to resolve problems or report issues to team lead and/or department supervisor.

Education:
High School or GED Required
Experience:
One year of relevant phlebotomy and/or specimen processing /laboratory experience
Licensure/Certification:
Phlebotomy Certification - ASCP, NHA, ASPT, AMT or a national accrediting agency approved by Laboratory Senior Leadership Required
MLA certification from ASCP, CMLA certification from AMT Preferred
