Responsibilities:

The Medical Assistant works in collaboration with the physicians, Clinic Director and other members of the staff to provide clinical and administrative functions for comprehensive patient care. The Medical Assistant must be acquainted with policies and procedures directly involved in the standard practices of the administration of the clinic and treatment of the patient. The Medical Assistant acts as an assistant to the physician, or advanced practice practitioner and performs such duties as obtaining treatment authorization requests (TARs), refill prescription requests, assists physician and practitioner with minor surgical procedures, PAP smears, dressing changes, etc. The Medical Assistant acts as the patient advocate and performs those duties necessary to treat the patient's physical, emotional and spiritual needs. All activities carried out by the Medical Assistant reflects those values espoused in the Dignity Health, SMMC mission statement and vision.

Qualifications:

* At least two years of outpatient ambulatory clinic care experience in the field of Internal Medicine.
* High School Graduate
* Medical Assistant Certificate, BASIC LIFE SUPPORT-AHA (CT CPR BLS) required.
* Bilingual skills (English & Spanish) required.
* Knowledge of common CPT and ICD coding for outpatient Internal Medicine care.
* Knowledge of outpatient clinicaladministrative procedures including familiarity with common billing protocols.
* Experience with obtaining treatment authorization requests, verification of insurance status, and refilling prescription requests.
* Able to assist physician with minor procedures such as PAP smears, EKG's, and dressing changes, and to perform routine invasive procedures, such as venipuncture and catheterization, in accordance with established clinical protocol.
* Ability to maintain calendars and schedule appointments. This includes familiarity with computerized scheduling systems.
* Knowledge of inventory management practices
