Overview:
Waters Corporation is seeking a Mechanical Engineer II to become a key contributor of our LC-MS Business Segment in Milford, MA. In this role, the individual will drive new product innovation in the development of next generation Liquid Chromatography instruments and systems as part of the Detector Development Team.
Working in a multi-disciplinary environment where high precision mechanical design intersects with physics, electronics, firmware, software and chemistry, the contributor will be responsible for multiple aspects of mechanical design, analysis and test of subsystems and complete instruments from concept through to production.
Responsibilities:
* Develop and create detailed design and mechanical layout of components, subassemblies, and top-level instruments from concept through production
* Verify product requirements and define design specifications
* Design precision machined, plastic molded, and cast parts that are critical to function, user interface, or both while ensuring cost effectiveness and manufacturability
* Conduct detailed engineering analysis and test of components, subassemblies, and instruments to verify design and specification goals
* Perform mechanical, fluid, thermal, and systems analyses to support new and existing designs
* Lead in prototype build and preproduction activities
* Develop control logic for electromechanical, fluid and thermal systems
* Adhere to regulations such as ISO 9001, EN 61010-1, and 21 CFR 820
* Broadly utilize DFM (Design For Manufacture) methods and GD&T
* Prepare, follow through with, and present design and drawing reviews
* Interface with Marketing, Reliability, Test Engineering, and Service throughout the Development Lifecycle
* Work closely with New Product Introduction to support the smooth transition of design into volume manufacturing
Qualifications:
Education/Experience:
* Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering and minimum 3 years experience in a related field
* Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred
Skills:
* Proficiency designing precision mechanical components and assemblies taking into consideration design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, interchangeability, ease of assembly, and cost
* Proven analtical and hands on skills
* Proficiency using 3D parametric modeling software (preferably Solidworks)
* Proficiency conducting Finite Element Analysis (CFD and experience with ANSYS considered a plus)
* Proficiency with Matlab, Python or equivalent tools
* Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, materials, solid and fluid mechanics, and heat transfer
* Strong knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5 2009 as well as industry drafting standards
* Knowledge of injection molded plastics design desirable
* Experience with DFM (Design for Manufacture) methodology
* Experience processing ECO's, practicing organized revision control using a Product Data Management tool (PDM - SAP preferred)
* Fluency in English - written and spoken
* Excellent written and oral communication skills
* Ability to collaborate effectively within and outside of team, possessing strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with management, peers, suppliers and customers
* Experience with Opto-Mechanical Systems a plus
