Overview:
The Manager, Underwriting role oversees the new and renewal underwriting portfolio of workers' compensation and multi-line accounts and clients for the Western Region. The role provides leadership and management for staff of Underwriters and Underwriting Assistants who are responsible for underwriting, review, and placement of risks with AmTrust. The team is focused on business from $500 to $100,000 in written premium. This individual is responsible for the profitable growth of the portfolio and maintains a solid understanding of AmTrust's mission, vision, and values. Upholds the standards of the AmTrust organization.
This position is hybrid out of our Scottsdale, Arizona office. We operate on a schedule of 3 days on-site and 2 days remotely throughout the week.
Responsibilities:
* Provides strong leadership by mentoring and guiding the team of underwriters and underwriting assistants to foster their professional development and drive success.
* Accountable for achieving operating income, real growth objectives and maintaining quality of business.
* Takes a leadership role in ensuring that the team adheres to company guidelines and standards regarding risk acceptability.
* Demonstrates leadership in managing the selection and denial of new and renewal business, including management of pricing targets, renewal rate and retention targets, and profitability targets.
* Ensures that underwriting decisions are monitored through regular audits and address issues as appropriate individually or through group training.
* Working in tandem with sales leadership and management; builds, maintains, and improves producer relationships through responsive engagement, market visibility, and solutions-oriented underwriting.
* Manages and monitors all stages of underwriting execution.
* Creates and distributes management reports detailing various functions and status monthly.
* Travel as needed to perform agency visits or to attend company and industry meetings.
* Demonstrates leadership by staying current with market trends and demands.
* Performs other functionally related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
* 10+ years of underwriting experience with multiline focus, 5 of those being in a leadership role
* Demonstrated effective management and exceptional leadership skills in guiding teams to success
* Thorough knowledge of property/casualty underwriting and demonstrated history in building a profitable portfolio
* Demonstrated ability to lead, plan and work well with others
* Extensive knowledge of NCCI, ISO, and State regulations relating to insurance
* Strong understanding of underwriting best practices
* Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
* Strong organizational, analytical, and interpretive skills
* Ability to effectively multi-task and work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
* Ability to collaborate, "think outside the box" and make sound decisions to resolve complex matters
* Ability to travel and work outside normal business hours
