Operates extra-corporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to support or replace the patient's cardiopulmonary/, circulatory function and ensures the proper management of physiologic functions by monitoring the necessary variables. Scope of Practice: Duties upon prescription by a physician and in accordance with hospital policy include, but are not limited to, the safe performance and /or management of:, Extra-corporeal circulation/cardiopulmonary support, Counter-pulsation, Circulatory support/ventricular assistance, Extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), Blood conservation techniques/auto-transfusion, Myocardial preservation, Anticoagulation and hematologic monitoring/analysis, Physiological monitoring/analysis, Blood gas and blood chemistry monitoring/analysis, Induction of hypothermia/hyperthermia with reversal, Hemodilution, Hemo-filtration/Ultra-filtration, Administration of medications, blood components and anesthetic agents via the extra-corporeal circuit, Documentation associated with described duties, Other duties may include: Isolated limb/organ perfusion, Electro-physiological analysis, Organ preservation, Dialysis assistance.

Responsibilities:

* 1. 1. Prepares for cardiac and non-cardiac procedures.
* 1.1 Assesses patient medical status and calculates perfusion requirements (i.e. blood flow, BSA, CI).

* 2. Conducts perfusion techniques
* 2.1 Monitors perfusion procedures and patient status to maintain appropriate patient vital signs, flows, temperature, pressure, etc.

* 3. Education
* 3.1 Maintains CCP status through meetings, inservices and publications. Keeps current with new developments in perfusion technology and cardiac surgery.

* 4. Communication and Interaction
* 4.1 Works well as a team member, lending assistance when needed.

* 5. Competency Checklist or In-service Review
* 5.1 ACT

* 6. Clinical Lead Role
* 6.1 Work with the Medical Directors for the Newborn and Pediatric ECMO Program and the Adult ECMO Program to ensure ELSO program standards are being met and assist with efforts to achieve and maintain Center of Excellence designation.

* 7. Clinical Lead Role for pediatrics
* 7.1 Work with the medical directors and leadership for the Newborn Intensive Care Unit and Children 's Heart Center programs assisting with efforts to achieve and maintain quality and assurance goals and standards.

* 8. Additional Responsibilities
* 8.1 Coordination of supply management with appropriate on site personal to ensure adequate levels and minimize outdates

Qualifications:

EDUCATION

Graduation from an accredited school of cardiopulmonary perfusion with a masters degree or a bachelors degree program with minimum of two (2) years of experience or a certificate degree program with experience in Cardioperfusion. Earn at least 15 CEU's from attending perfusion related meetings within one year prior to application deadline and presented the acquired knowledge to fellow Perfusionists. If attendance to a meeting is unattainable, the Perfusionist may acquire 15 CEU's from any combinations specified by ABCP, including categories two and three.

EXPERIENCE

Be a Lead, Departmental Committee Member, or Super-user for at least one device or piece of equipment Student/Staff Mentor Participation in a Community Benefit Project/Volunteer work for a total of eight hours within one year prior to application deadline Present to the Perfusion staff in either a case study, journal, or competency/in-service Have at least 200 hours of call in the past six months prior to application deadline (~average of 15 1/3 hours of call per week) Completed at least three cases involving initiation of ECMO, VAD, LA-Fem Bypass, Transplant, or exposure to a Pediatric case in the past twelve months prior to application deadline

LICENSURE

Connecticut State Perfusion License/ABCP Certified Clinical Perfusionist within one year of hire.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Anatomy and cardio-respiratory systems, specialized medical, mechanical and electronic equipment, medical, clinical and surgical procedures and practices, hospital organization and administrative policies and procedures . Requires analytical, organizational and oral and written communication skills. Achieve/maintain BLS/CPR certification
