Overview: Works in various areas of the laboratory, registering patients, collecting samples, and assessing the acceptability of samples for testing. Processes samples for testing including centrifugation, aliquoting, storage, and shipping. Provides support for clinical testing including preparation of slides, loading instruments, and result reporting. Performs waived and moderate complexity testing. Responsibilities: Principal Duties and Responsibilities (*Essential Functions) 1. Perform waived and or moderately complex testing and assess/investigate integrity of test results as permitted by regulatory agencies. 2. Perform, result, review and maintain quality control records and seek assistance for resolution of issues. 3. Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on equipment used in performing job functions. 4. Perform proficiency testing, per standard patient testing protocol. 5. Assists in setting up Routine Cultures 6. Assists in processing positive Blood Cultures 7. Receives & processes laboratory specimens: Creates quick HOV's in EPIC Releases EPIC Orders into Sunquest Lab System Label specimens & distributes for processing 8. Prepares specimens for transport between hospital or reference laboratories. 9. Picks up Routine & STAT Specimens. 10. Responsible for capturing accurate financial information for billing. May include billing work-queue in EPIC that troubleshoots any billing related issues. 11. Assists with phone calls, faxes and miscellaneous clerical functions. 12. Perform other duties needed and/or assigned. Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities * General knowledge of laboratory procedures & practices. * Demonstrated oral & written communication skills. * Excellent interpersonal skills. * Ability to work independently in a team environment. * Energetic, self-motivated & driven. * Ability to provide compassionate patient care orientation. Education All post high school education must have been obtained from a recognized College or University. Additional education or experience may be substituted requirements on a year for year basis should the substitution not conflict with State or Board certification/license requirements. Degree/Diploma Obtained Program of Study Required/Preferred High School Diploma / GE Required Phlebotomy or Clinical Laboratory Assistant Program Strongly Preferred Experience Years of Experience Field Required/Preferred 1 - 2 years Hospital / Clinical setting Preferred Certifications and Licensures License/Certification Required/Preferred PBT or MLA (ASCP) Preferred Model of Care and Conduct Methodist Hospitals strives for excellence and insists on high standards of conduct and performance in everything we do.
