This is a provisional appointment.
Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):
Under general supervision, serves as chief of a field survey party with responsibility for the performance of field surveys of ordinary/professional difficulty and performs a wide variety of other beginning-level professional civil engineering work in the field and the office.
Responsibilities:
* Supervises a field party engaged in preliminary and final surveys on construction work.
* Runs surveys prior to construction in order to identify and locate surface objects within the traverse.
* Computes area quantities from recorded field notes; checks areas on plot plans.
* Plots cross-sections and computes areas and volume of earth moved in street excavations.
* Draws preliminary plans and estimate the cost of construction for a minor project.
* Makes property surveys and topographic surveys of lands used for various municipal purposes.
* Stakes outlines and grades for the construction of streets.
* Performs related work as required.
Required to work any emergency as directed by the Chief of Streets or designee.
Qualifications:
* Applicants must have at least two (2) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in Civil Engineering work in such areas as construction, survey, design, transportation, hydraulics, structural, sanitary, drafting, environmental, highway, architectural, airport, soils, and materials or any equivalent combination of the required experience and the educational substitutions.
* Applicants must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts driver's license.
* Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
