Job Summary:
The Estimator scrutinizes incoming inquiries, evaluates all technical issues, prepares estimates of the costs for the execution of the works, submits proposals to clients and negotiates terms and conditions with the clients to contract award. The Estimator has knowledge of construction means and methods, costs and engineering principles. The Estimator will estimate the cost of self-perform work and project indirect costs. The Estimator will be a self-starter and work efficiently and must be able to meet critical deadlines, and work as part of a greater team.
Duties and Responsibilities:
* Lead and/or support the preparation of detailed quantity takeoffs and cost estimates at all project stages (conceptual, SD, DD, CD, GMP, hard bid).
* Interpret drawings, specifications, and design narratives to define scope, clarify assumptions, and identify cost drivers and risks.
* Develop pricing using historical data, market intelligence, production rates, and vendor/trade contractor quotes.
* Solicit, level, and evaluate subcontractor and supplier proposals; ensure scope coverage and completeness.
* Build and maintain estimate structures, cost breakdowns, and bid tabs in estimating software.
* Perform value engineering and alternate design/pricing analyses to improve cost, schedule, and constructability.
* Prepare clarifications, inclusions/exclusions, and risk registers; contribute to contingency and escalation assessments.
* Support development of logistics plans, phasing strategies, and preliminary schedules in collaboration with preconstruction and operations.
* Participate in internal estimate reviews and presentations; clearly communicate rationale, assumptions, and variances.
* Track market conditions and labor/material trends; update unit pricing and cost databases.
* Uphold Skanska's safety culture and ethical standards in all estimating and procurement activities.

Education and Experience:
Required Qualifications:
* 3+ Years of experience reading blue prints
* 3+ years demonstrated experience with commercial construction electrical estimating and estimating software solutions
* Geometry - proficiency in measures of length, area and volume calculations.
* Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Excel, Microsoft Word, and Powerpoint
* Bachelor's Degree - Construction Management or 8 years equivalent experience plus minimum 3 years prior relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Certified Value Specialist (CVS)
* American Society for Professional Estimators (ASPE)
* Design Build Institute of America (DBIA) Associate Level certified
* Geometry - proficiency in measures of length, area, and volume calculations.
* Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, review and QA estimating work, and present technical estimate deliverables to internal and external stakeholders.
* Experience leading small teams of Preconstruction Engineers/Associates and mentoring junior estimators.
* Familiarity with Skanska benchmarking/data systems (Skanska Metriks) or equivalent costdata platforms, and using benchmarking to validate estimates.
* Knowledge of delivery methods (LS Bid, CMGMP, DesignBuild) and their implications for preconstruction strategy.
* Experience developing procurement plans, scopes of work, bid packages, and participating in procurement strategy.
* Background in sustainable design practices (e.g., LEED) and ability to recommend green design solutions.
* Working knowledge of preconstruction insurance, bonds, and Subguard considerations.
* Track record of effective client-facing presentations and supporting business development efforts.
* Experience with schedule management during preconstruction (tracking design and estimating deliverables).
* Advanced technical writing skills for assumptions, clarification narratives, and technical estimate reports.
* Capacity to act as a "super user" for preconstruction applications and participate in continuous improvement initiatives.

The Physical Side of the Role: This is primarily a desk-based position with extensive computer work and prolonged sitting, up to 100% of the time. You can expect limited standing and walking-generally up to 25% on even surfaces. The role requires visual acuity for reading plans and inspecting work, including near and far vision, color vision, and depth perception. The typical noise level is quiet. The work environment is predominantly indoors in climate-controlled spaces, with occasional time (up to 25%) in areas that are indoors but not fully controlled or outdoors under cover. The position includes significant desk time for tasks such as computer work, document review, and meetings.
Work Environment/Conditions: This job is performed both in the office and in the field on an active construction site. Field work requires experience and confidence working in and around heavy industrial equipment and systems, which includes average to loud noises, the ability to traverse uneven grounds, and possible outdoor weather conditions. Vision requires the capacity for close and far vision, the ability to adjust focus, depth perception, and peripheral vision. Activities and responsibilities require frequent sitting (often working on a computer), frequent driving, flying, walking, standing, light lifting, bending, and reaching. Due to computer usage, there may be repetitive motions of the hands and wrists.
