Global Communities is seeking an Environmental Specialist for an anticipated project. This two-year program will contribute to the food and nutritional security of vulnerable communities in the Moskitia and the Atlantic Coast of Honduras through environmentally sustainable, resilient, and culturally relevant solutions. 

The Environmental Specialist will coordinate, in conjunction with the Social Specialist, the implementation of environmental management processes, ensuring compliance with the relevant Environmental and Social Standards (ESS) of the funder's Environmental and Social Framework (ESF) in the formulation and implementation of the business and community nutrition and hygiene plans of the participating groups. He/she will also assess environmental risks; ensure that measures are included to prevent, minimize, mitigate, and/or compensate them as relevant; ensure compliance with applicable national environmental regulations; and establish and maintain appropriate communication with the funder's environmental officers and national authorities. Responsibilities:

* Design, implement, and verify environmental risk management strategies. 

* Encourage the adoption of good practices to ensure sustainable activities and the availability of environmental resources. 

* Formulate the environmental management strategy to be implemented during the formulation and implementation of business plans.  

* Ensure that all activities are framed by and comply with national environmental standards for the prevention and mitigation of environmental impacts. 

* Promote the methodology for the preparation and execution of Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMP). 

* Lead the execution of the Environmental Management Plan activities in the field. 

* Evaluate environmental risks by applying measures to prevent, minimize, or mitigate them, classifying the level of impact of the activities. 

* Maintain adequate communication with the environmental officers of various counterparts, including the project funder. 

* Develop and follow up on good environmental practice standards to be implemented by producers. 

* Conduct monthly and quarterly reports on project implementation and monitoring. 

* Support the development of project management indicators as part of the project's Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Plan. 

Qualifications:

Key Requirements 

* A university degree in environmental sciences, natural resources, agriculture, or forestry, with a master's degree in environmental management and natural resources management or another area relevant to the functions of the position. 

* At least six (6) years of experience in environmental protection in the public or private sector. 

* Verifiable experience in the management of environmental licensing processes of at least five (5) projects in the agricultural and livestock sectors. 

* Verifiable experience in environmental risk assessment for agricultural, rural, or natural conservation area development programs or projects. 

* Knowledgeable of national environmental regulations and the Environmental and Social Standards of the World Bank's Environmental and Social Framework (ESF). 

* Verifiable experience advising or supporting processes to implement good environmental practices and integrated management of natural resources. 

* Verifiable experience in facilitating or leading organization and training processes on environmental and agroecological issues with rural and municipal communities or producers, preferably with indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples in ancestral territories. 

* Good verbal and written communication skills. 

* Leadership and ability to coordinate with technical teams from different disciplines. 

* Office, Ar-Gis programs or similar, GPS management. 

* 100% proficiency in Spanish (spoken, reading and writing). Knowledge of the Miskito, Tawaka, Pech and/or Garífuna language will be an advantage, but is not required.

* Broad understanding of the principles of humanitarian action emergency relief and resilience objectives.
