Overview: Performs nutritional assessment, evaluation, education, and planning in accordance with the NYSDOH WIC Program Manual. Makes recommendations and referrals to appropriate agencies for participants where needed. Responsibilities: * Determine nutritional risk eligibility of potential WIC clients. * Certifies/Recertify WIC participants for program benefits. * Conduct nutrition educational classes for groups. * Conduct individual nutrition counseling to high-risk participants. * Maintain charts of participants. Completes all nutrition screens in the WICSIS/NYWIC computer system on all eligible WIC participants. * Make appropriate referrals to health care providers and/or community resources for clients in need of such services. * Train para-professionals and/or students who affiliate with WIC. * Maintain waiting list in times of caseload reduction and follows protocol. * Evaluate methods and materials for nutritional education. Makes use of WIC approved educational materials. Uses materials appropriate to the educational and cultural needs of WIC clients. * Assign appropriate food package or prescription for each client. * Establish relationship with local health, social services, schools and community agencies that provide services to WIC clients. * Maintain professional competence by utilizing current knowledge of research and by participating in State, regional, and local programs for continuing education. * Perform anthropometric and hematological measurement where needed to expedite WIC services. * Must be aware of and responsive to the nutritional needs of neonatal, infant, pediatric, and adolescent patient population members. * Performs other tasks as requested. Qualifications: Education: * BS Degree in Food Science and Nutrition or BS in Home Economics and Nutrition - Required. * MS Degree in Nutrition preferred. Experience: * No prior experience required but at least 1 year professional experience or related field is preferred. Knowledge and Skills: * Good interpersonal skills. * Ability to fully utilize BHMS's electronic record systems. Licenses, Certification: * RDN, CDN license preferred but not required. * ADA Membership not required. Physical Requirements: * Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day. * Position will be required to stoop, bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
