The Diet Clerk, under the direction of the Director of Food and Nutrition Department is responsible for obtaining meal selections using the computer automated system. Assists in the dish room, the delivery of patient trays, floor stock, as well as other duties as assigned within the department depending on operational needs.

Responsibilities:

A day in the life of a Diet Clerk at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

* Assists patients in completing menu selections in compliance with prescribed diet, as assigned by dietitian. 
* Offers alternatives to menu as allowed on prescribed diet in accordance with food allergies or sensitivities, cultural, ethnic and religious preferences, when patient inquires or needs additional selections. 
* Answers phone with excellent customer service to take patient orders in accordance with food allergies or sensitivities, cultural, ethnic and religious preferences, when patient inquires or needs additional selections. 
* Distribute and collect menus. 
* Plans regular and modified menus based on current diet manual.
* Prepares and distributes supplements, tube feedings, and enteral formula in an accurate and timely manner.
*  Adheres to facility confidentiality, HIPAA regulations, and patient rights policies.
* Complies with regulatory agency standards, including federal, state and JCAHO. 
* Completes all required documentation, reports and logs. 
* Follows facility and department infection control policies and procedures. 
* Other duties and/or projects as assigned. 
*  Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications:

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: 

* High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs. 
* Ability to communicate effectively and exhibit great Customer Service skills. 
* Literate to the extent of reading and understanding printed menus and diet restrictions.
* Have basic knowledge of food handling techniques.
* Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; write routine reports and correspondence; speak effectively before clients or team members.
*  Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written or oral instructions; ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. 
* Other Qualifications: Possess necessary skills to effectively operate hospital's admission, discharge and transfer and other computer-based systems which manage patient-care records.

 Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

* One (1) year experience in food service.
