				Overview:

Supports the mission of NCH while providing clinical oversight/coverage for research animal care and use, medicine, disease diagnosis, and experimental techniques for researchers at The Abigail Wexner Research Institute. Ensures that research and clinical activities adhere to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Public Health Service (PHS) Policy regulations and helps maintain AAALAC International accreditation. 

Responsibilities:

* Demonstrates knowledge in preventative, clinical medicine, and surgery of laboratory animals (rodents, NHPs, aquatics, agricultural species). 
* Demonstrates knowledge in laboratory animal biosafety and biosecurity programs, including the acquisition, quarantine, and disposition of research animals. 
* Provides guidance to research personnel on animal model and protocol development as well as execution and follow-up on technical research projects.  
* Contributes to the management and professional development of the Animal Resources Core (ARC) staff.
* May have direct reports: veterinary supervisor(s).
* Assists with the development, review, revision, and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's).
* Assures compliance with USDA regulations, PHS Policy, the Controlled Substance Act, and other pertinent guidance and legislation. 
* Supports maintenance of AAALAC accreditation.
* Participates on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and/or Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), including semi-annual inspections and protocol review. 
* Participates in the veterinary on-call rotation.
* Participates in teaching and academic responsibilities for visiting trainees/students.
* Performs miscellaneous related duties as required.

NATIONWIDE CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL REQUIREMENTS

* Completes required NCH safety training and occupational health screening on an annual basis.
* Test negative or have medical clearance for tuberculosis on an annual basis.
* Knowledgeable of the safety precautions necessary for work with various research species.
* Remains familiar with Animal Resources Core (ARC) emergency response procedures.

Qualifications:

Reports to: ARC Associate Director
Minimum requirements
* Education: Veterinary degree (DVM/VMD) from an AVMA-accredited school of veterinary medicine or ECFVG (Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates) certification.
* Licensure: Active Veterinary License in one of the United States. Ability to obtain Ohio license within 6-months is desired. American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) board certification or eligibility is highly desirable.
* Experience: Post-graduate work at an ACLAM-recognized laboratory animal medicine training program or equivalent is highly desirable. 3+ years working as a clinical veterinarian is preferred (residency years qualify).
* Knowledgeable of federal Animal Welfare Regulations, Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and AAALAC accreditation standards.
* High-level computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook).
* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
