				Overview:

The Clinical Lab Technical Specialist collaborates with supervisor, manager, and Technical Director to maintain technical and procedural operations in the section. Assists and leads in project development/implementation, quality assurance, orientation training, continued education, and competency testing for staff.

Responsibilities:

*  Researches, develops, and implements new or improved procedures and instrumentation, performing and/or reviewing quality control, and quality improvement and regulatory/compliance assignments.  

*  Develops, writes, and updates procedures as requested. Maintains knowledge of current federal, state, and local laws and regulations, techniques, procedures, and protocols, lab-wide and within lab section. Reviews and acknowledges procedures as required.

*  Assists Manager by serving as a liaison with the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and may help coordinate the inspections by CAP for all laboratory locations. Organizes the selection of CAP survey materials and reviews performance. 

*  Supports process development/improvement within the section, including participating in quality assurance, continuing education programs, and section meetings. Trains new staff members and ensures staff is competent/educated regarding processes and protocols.

*  In Lab Testing Areas (non-waived testing): Fulfills the role of the CLIA "General Supervisor" for High Complexity testing and "Technical Consultant" for Moderate Complexity testing.

*  Maintains a safe environment. Wears appropriate personal protective equipment as designated by lab area. Reports spills and hazardous situations immediately and acts appropriately. Follows established guidelines for disclosure of patient information. Assists Manager with the Laboratory Inspection Team to prepare for inspections, this includes the self-inspections performed during non-survey years.

*  Delivers service excellence, One Team collaboration, and quality patient care through adjusting communication styles to adapt to various cultural differences, addressing concerns by researching problems and identifying resolutions, using basic troubleshooting skills, and efficiently handling interruptions and functions with changing environments or circumstances. Promotes a cohesive work environment and identifies resolutions to improve morale.

Qualifications:

Education Requirement: Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science; or a chemical, physical, or biological science from an accredited institution, required.

Certifications: American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification, preferred.

Skills: 

*  Ability to work independently under minimal supervision.

*  Effective organizational and communication skills.

*  Strong computer skills to produce reports and graphs as needed. Demonstrates discipline-specific technical skills.

*  Promotes a team environment and maintains a cooperative and supportive atmosphere.

Experience: Three years' experience in a similar laboratory, required.
