This is a provisional appointment.
Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):
Under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Electrical Inspectors and the Deputy Commissioner of Building &
Structures, the Chief Electrical Inspector will supervise the activities of Wire Inspectors in the Inspectional Services
Department.
Responsibilities:
* Shall perform the duties of the Supervisor of Electrical Inspectors in his/her absence.
* Serves as a point of contact for wire inspectors when complications arise in connections with inspections or
complaints.
* Performs complex inspections of electrical wiring and directs the correction of defective or unlawful work.
* Issues notices on defective work and makes inspections to determine if ordered corrections have been made.
* Performs special investigations on complaints received in connection with work done without a proper permit.
* Examines plans and specifications for electrical work in order to gather evidence to testify in cases of violations
of code, laws, and ordinances regulating electrical installations and repairs.
* Tests the stability of poles and support of overhead wiring.
* Inspects vaults and manholes for the presence of gas.
* Investigates fires, accidents, and other conditions believed to have electrical origins.
* Control, implementation, and oversight of special Annual Maintenance permits.
* Represents Electrical Inspectors in Court.
* Perform related work as required.
Qualifications:
* Applicants must have at least six (6) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, practical experience in the
electrical field as a Massachusetts Licensed Journeyman Electrician. A bachelor's degree in electrical
engineering or a related field from an accredited college/university may be substituted for two (2) years of the
required experience. An associate's degree in a related field may be substituted for one (1) year of the required
experience.
* Ability to plan, assign, and review the work of staff engaged in inspecting electrical installations and equipment.
* Must have a thorough knowledge of the provisions of the Massachusetts Electrical Code.
* Strong oral and written communication skills.
* Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the position.
* Ability to write or input comprehensive reports of inspections and accidents.
* CORI check required.
* Must have and maintain a valid MA driver's license.
Boston Residency Required.
