				Responsibilities:

GFT is seeking a CEI Transportation Technician IV to join our Transportation Team in Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, Wilmington or Asheville, NC!

What you'll be challenged to do:
Project Management & Oversight
* Serve as the lead field inspector and subject matter expert for assigned transportation projects.

* Attend and contribute to pre-construction, progress, and issue-resolution meetings with contractors, DOT, and engineering staff.

* Act as a liaison between the Resident Engineer, GFT project team, and field personnel, responding to inquiries, resolving complaints, and ensuring smooth operations.

Field Inspections & Quality Control
* Perform advanced-level field inspections on transportation projects including roadways, bridges, drainage systems, utility relocations, signage, and striping.

* Ensure full compliance with DOT Standard Specifications, Standard Drawings, Special Provisions, project-specific contracts, and the DOT Construction Manual.

* Accurately measure and record quantities of work performed, and monitor construction activities for contract compliance, workmanship, and safety.

Technical Documentation
* Prepare and maintain comprehensive Inspector's Daily Reports (IDRs) with precise documentation of work activities, test results, weather, labor, equipment, and materials.

* Set up and manage Pay Record Books and track material quantities for monthly payment verification.

* Collect, review, and organize Material Received Certifications and ensure all materials are approved and documented before installation.

Contractor Coordination & Payment Verification
* Coordinate with contractors and DOT staff to compile, review, and finalize pay applications, ensuring accuracy and compliance with contract terms.

* Provide guidance and oversight on payment quantities, change orders, and potential project impacts.

Materials Testing & Conformance
* Conduct or supervise on-site material testing as required (e.g., compaction, concrete slump, asphalt density, air content).

* Check materials upon delivery and installation to ensure specification compliance and reject non-conforming materials.

Problem Resolution & Communication
* Identify potential problems and make field decisions or elevate issues to the Resident Engineer and project manager as appropriate.

* Communicate clearly and constructively with contractors to correct deficiencies and maintain project alignment.

* Document all field observations and actions taken to address quality or safety concerns.

Compliance & Leadership
* Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, safety regulations, and GFT's internal quality system as outlined in the Quality Manual.
* Guide junior technicians and provide on-the-job training when needed.
* Maintain and enforce company policies, site safety protocols, and professional standards on all assigned projects.

Qualifications:

What you'll bring to our firm:
Education & Experience
* High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or technical degree in construction or civil engineering preferred.

* Minimum of six (6) years of experience in transportation construction inspection or a related civil infrastructure role.

* Proven experience working with NCDOT projects, specifications, and documentation systems.

Certifications
* Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain the following NCDOT certifications (or equivalent as project requires):

* ACI Concrete Field Testing - Grade I

* NCDOT QMS Asphalt Testing and/or Concrete Testing

* Nuclear Gauge Safety Certification

* NCDOT Erosion and Sediment Control

* Work Zone Safety

* Other project-required certifications

Technical Skills
* Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook); experience with eConstruction or electronic field documentation platforms is a plus.

* Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, blueprints, technical drawings, and maps.

* Proficient in construction math, including computing volumes, percentages, rates, and cost estimates.

* Skilled in using construction inspection tools such as levels, total stations, GPS units, measuring tapes, and nuclear gauges.

* Strong understanding of cut/fill calculations, grading operations, and construction surveying principles.

Working Conditions:

* Work in outdoor environment 95% of the time.
* Moderate noise level.
* Travel via automobile on daily basis.

Compensation:

The range for this position is salary range is $29.00 - $44.00. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
