PenFed is hiring a (Hybrid) Associate Engineer, IT Mainframe Systems at our Tysons, Virginia location. The primary purpose of this job is to assist with installing and tailoring of the operating system within a mainframe environment; does other related work as required. This position will provide basic technical and functional support, maintenance, administration, and documentation under direct supervision for PenFed's various enterprise, core, member facing, and employee facing systems.

* Study assigned systems and technologies to learn the assigned PenFed mainframe environment, along with associated 3rd party software systems/tools.
* Establish technical knowledge and capabilities through industry related technical research and study, continue to develop improved understanding of mainframe systems and technologies.
* Assist in the technical support for mainframe systems to include troubleshooting, repair and recovery from basic hardware or software failures in accordance with standard operating procedures.
* Assist with the review of business problems and help develop approaches to provide corrective solution options.
* Assists with the modification of the operating systems relative to problem resolution within a mainframe environment.
* Supports programmers with the job control language (JCL), utilities (both operating system and database) and software packages.
* With guidance, perform routine operational tasks, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, resources, systems, and key processes. Review system and sub-system's logs, and verify completion of scheduled maintenance jobs.
* Following defined processes, perform systems related maintenance such as IPL'ing, patching, backups, flash copies, health monitoring, hardware/software asset management, software cataloging and decommissioning.
* Work with peers, install, configure, test and maintain systems, 3rd party software and system management tools.
* Interact with senior engineers to identify areas of improvement for operational efficiency.
* Research programs and processes to fully understand affected processes, determine problem cause and ultimately provide resolution options along with corrective code.
* Hone technical skills to participate in 24x7 on-call rotation and provide support as needed.
* Create or augment existing system documentation when necessary.
* Assist with the development, documentation, and testing of new products and system enhancements of a simple nature.
* Work with more senior technical staff to fully understand PenFed Change Control and operational procedures, and these are adhered to for all production changes.
* Assist with maintaining Penfed's compliance with all applicable federal, state and local laws, regulations and ordinances by abiding by PenFed compliance program and all policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
* Maintain a working knowledge of changes to policies and procedures within the IT Department.

Qualifications:
Equivalent combination of education and experience is considered.
* Bachelor's Degree and one (1) year of programming experience or Associate's Degree and three years of programming experience or (c) a satisfactory equivalent combination of the foregoing training and experience.
* Working knowledge of the principles and skills unique to operating systems coding, analysis and problem solving.
* Working knowledge of utility programs.
* Working knowledge of communication networks.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position will not supervise employees.

Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to an indoor office setting with moderate noise.
*Most roles require working in an office setting with moderate noise and the ability to lift 25 pounds.*
Travel
Ability to travel to various worksites and be on-call is required.
