Job Summary:
The Assistant Trainmaster is responsible for hiring, supervising, scheduling, and training train and yard crews, dispatchers, and other train personnel as needed. This role ensures that all employees performing these functions comply with railroad rules and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations. Additionally, the Assistant Trainmaster assists with conducting railroad rules classes, developing and revising operating documents, preparing FRA reports, and performing other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities:
* Fully understand and support Xanterra's Mission Statement, Cultural Pillars, Community Commitment, and Core Values.
* Demonstrate flexibility while consistently meeting performance standards and completing assigned tasks effectively.
* Recognizes, reacts, and reports safety hazards.
* Follows the company's safety rules, procedures, and standard safety practices.
* Assists GCR Trainmaster with managing Department of Transportation/Federal Railroad Administration reporting programs.
* Ability to communicate intelligently, professionally, and positively with all levels of staff or passengers, especially relating to safety issues or when involved with emergencies.
* Understands and complies with policies and procedures regarding conducting railroad transportation.
* Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with coworkers and other departments, demonstrating a teamwork orientation.
* Administers railroad rules classes, tests, one-on-one training of employees, and observes employee performance to determine the level of qualification and implements remedial or corrective training.
* Perform duties in an office environment and work proficiently with computers, software, and relevant equipment.
* May require working in positions that ATM is qualified to perform, such as Engineer, Dispatcher, Conductor, or PM Foreman.
* Create and maintain work schedules, timekeeping, time off requests, and hours of service.
* Completes and communicates with HR and Risk to ensure drug and alcohol random pool testing is completed quarterly as required by the company's DOT/FRA policies.
* Actively hires, supervises, coaches, and trains employees, including directing proper department orientation and training of newly hired employees.
* Responsible for actively and positively resolving employee conflict within the area of responsibility & administering consistent disciplinary action when necessary.
* Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
* Current Locomotive Engineer Certification, or previous with the ability to recertify within 90 days.
* Minimum 2 years of previous railroad experience in a supervisory position.
* Must be proficient with Microsoft Office programs, computers, software, and relevant equipment.
* Must possess a valid and clear Arizona Driver's License and comply with GCR Special Instructions and the Xanterra/GCR Vehicle Policy.
* Must be at least 19 years of age.
Preferred Qualifications:
* First Aid/CPR certification.
* Bi-lingual English/Spanish skills.
Employment Conditions:
* Work safely with minimal supervision to prevent workplace accidents or injuries and ensure company equipment always remains secure.
* Wear protective equipment such as a hard hat, hearing protection, safety-toe boots, and safety glasses as required by the job duties.
* Work hours may involve a nonstandard schedule, including on-call availability during evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed for callouts.
* Complete and pass assessments, annual training, and safety rules examination.
* Requires random testing for drugs and/or alcohol.
* May require a medical examination and physical capabilities test.
Environmental Conditions:
* Work outside in all weather conditions and at elevated heights on occasion.
* Work with 480V electrical while working with the train's Head End Power (HEP).
* May be exposed to awkward ergonomic conditions, heat, fumes, loud noises, and oils daily.
Physical Requirements:
* Heavy work, lifting, and pulling up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 70 pounds on a rare basis.
* Team lifts items weighing up to 100 pounds on a rare basis.
* Stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/balance/climb daily.
* Walking long distances over uneven terrain as required.
* Ability to recognize and interpret audible, visual, and olfactory conditions, signals, and warnings.
* The ability to distinguish colors, signals, or signs from a distance at night or in poor lighting conditions.
