Overview: The Off-Shift Per Diem Assistant Director of Nursing assumes shift responsibility for the overall assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care on all clinical units and non-clinical departments. Carries out hospital and nursing service values, clinical, and quality management for the hospital. Promotes the health system service standards and creates a patient focused caring environment while addressing and meeting the individual needs of the patient. Fosters an environment of collaboration and respect with physician colleagues, nurses, and other health-care team members. Requirement to work holidays of which Christmas, New Year's, and Thanksgiving are included along with weekend coverage. Responsibilities: Standard Compliance: * Maintains current knowledge of and ensures compliance with all regulatory and professional standards of care. * Utilizes creativity in developing quality/performance improvement programs, instructing staff and implementing new and improved standards. Operational Performance: * Assists with developing, and monitoring personnel, supply and equipment in collaboration with the nursing leadership and department directors. * Ensures adequate daily coverage in accordance with established staffing needs. * Assists with monitoring unit operational performance metrics, agency and overtime costs. Clinical Practice/Patient Care: * Collaborates with the nursing leadership to establish nursing care standards and evaluates staff compliance. * Facilitates the effective provision of support services essential to patient care. * Maintains a safe and caring environment for patients, families and staff that is conducive to positive health teaching and maintenance; patient and family expectations of care; develops mechanism to assess same. * Recognizes the need for patient care to be delivered in a culturally sensitive manner and role models sensitivity to staff. Management: * Participates in the overall planning process for the service. * Responsible for ensuring the overall planning process for the unit is sustained. * Utilizes findings from patient satisfaction survey and with input from the staff, to establish unit based customer service agenda. * Uses findings from staff satisfaction survey and with input from the staff, to establish a unit based collaboration with nursing leadership. * Develops an effective plan for delivery of nursing care within the assigned area of responsibility. * Responds to patient and family concerns or complaints with sensitivity and compassion in a timely fashion * Communicates effectively and ongoing to members of the health care team. Human Resource Development/Management: * Educates and evaluates staff. * Works with Human Resources and nursing leadership to counsel, discipline and terminate staff as needed. * Educates staff on new and existing department procedures and systems (e.g. information systems, fiscal responsibility, etc.) * Makes recommendations and provides opportunities for growth and development of personnel. * Creates and maintains a supportive working environment for all staff and students. Demonstrates self-development and keeps currents on a variety of clinical management and health care topics. * Responds in a timely fashion to staff concerns and functions pro-actively regarding concerns. * Creates and maintains an atmosphere of respect and courtesy toward patients, staff and colleagues. * Employs learning organization principles and techniques in all aspects of unit leadership. * Promotes a level of professionalism on the unit. Interactive Relationships: * Promotes empowerment of the staff by utilizing collaborative approaches and encouraging new ideas. * Intentional rounding is performed throughout shift coverage including patient rounding. * Participates as a member of the health-care team and various interdisciplinary committees to improve patient care and meet patient needs. * Promotes collegial relationships based on mutual respect and support. * Performs related duties as required. Qualifications: Experience: * Minimum of three (3) years nursing leadership experience. * Demonstrated leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, required. Education: * Master's Degree in Nursing is required. * Current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State. Knowledge and Skills: * Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. * Good written and verbal communication skills. * Excellent creative skills, ideas to improve existing programs. * Services, processes, ideas that have impact on this job and the department. Physical Requirements: * Involves standing, walking, sitting, lifting and talking. * May include some repetitive motions. * Perform other duties as required.
