Overview:
This position is physically located in Balad, Iraq
The Airfield Operations Specialist is responsible for the comprehensive management of the airfield's day-to-day operations, ensuring a safe, secure, and efficient environment for both local aircraft and transient flights. This role involves coordinating activities such as runway maintenance, aircraft safety checks, and communication with air traffic control to facilitate fluid operations. The Airfield Operations Specialist is also tasked with implementing safety protocols and addressing any operational issues that may arise.
Responsibilities:
This position description is subject to change at any time as needed to meet the requirements of the program or company.
* Inspect all areas of the airfield, including pavements, markings, signs, lighting, obstructions, address Bird/Wildlife Aircraft Strike Hazard (BASH) concerns, fencing, habitat management, construction areas, Foreign Object Debris (FOD), and airfield fueling activities, in accordance with applicable regulations.
* Individuals must be able to operate a vehicle on an airfield and communicate with the air traffic control tower.
* Effectively coordinate closures with little to no disturbance to flying operations.
* Coordinate construction activities on the airfield and prioritize discrepancies for maintenance repairs.
Respond to in-flight and ground emergencies on the airfield.
* Familiar with base operations: maintaining events logs, flight schedules/logs, use of crash phone and emergency notifications, updating airfield status boards and discrepancy logs.
* Familiar with airfield driving programs and requirements with the ability to effectively train new airfield drivers.
* Issue notice to airmen via the FAA NOTAM (Federal Aviation Administration Notice to Air Mission) system.
* Must be able to multitask in high-stress situations
* Coordinate all aircraft activities with relevant departments to ensure continuous operations.
* Familiar with wildlife control devices such as BASH cannons.
* Enforce a FOD-free airfield.
* Work collaboratively with other departments, agencies, foreign governments, and foreign nationals to complete work harmoniously.
* Coordinate day-to-day airfield activities.
* Required to work rotating day and night shifts.
Qualifications:
* QUALIFICATIONS
* Must possess the requisite skill level and meet career progression standards in accordance with DAFMAN 13-204v2, achieving qualifications at the journeyman level or equivalent.
* USAF Airfield Management 5-Skill level certification.
* A minimum of three (3) years of experience in airfield management is required, along with an additional three (3) years of experience as an airfield management shift lead or in an equivalent position
* A high school diploma is required. An Associate's degree (AA/AS) in aviation is preferred.
* Candidates must be able to obtain an airfield driver permit and must have normal color vision.
* A valid state driver's license is also required.
* Applicants should have knowledge of airfield criteria, conditions, and safety factors that are essential for imposing restrictions on aircraft operations and issuing NOTAMs (Notices to Airmen).
* Proficient in radio and telephone procedures, as well as skills in message and report preparation, and notification procedures.
* Knowledge of airfield criteria, conditions and safety factors that provide the basis for imposing restrictions on aircraft operations and issuance of NOTAMS.
* Familiarity with applicable DOD, FAA, and ICAO regulations and procedures necessary to support the safe conduct of flight operations is also required.
* PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
* An Associate's degree (AA/AS) in aviation preferred.
* PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK CONDITIONS
* Candidates are required to work in a challenging physical environment, which may include exposure to sand, strong odors, noise, extreme weather conditions, and various occupational risks.
* Flexibility is essential, as the role may involve short notice movements in adverse conditions.
* Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
* Must be capable of working in an extreme weather condition with temperatures exceeding 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
* Indoor and/or outdoor environment with very adverse and harsh conditions (i.e., hot, dry, dusty, desert environment with average temperatures of 30 degrees in the winter and 130 degrees in the summer months).
* Includes some industrial production environment conditions as well.
* Work may require heavy lifting, stooping, climbing, prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, and working with or in areas where a potential could exist for exposure to physical, chemical, or biological agents.
* Employee use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required for some situations. PPE includes, but is not limited to, head, foot, torso, respiratory, vision, and hearing protective devices.
* Must comply with all Fire and Safety Regulations and post policies.
